Getting the Wheeling Fever
|
I just put in a newer transmission last week.
This week I was doing something that maybe should have gotten me an a/t overheat light.
Situation: Climbing a hill 9% grade 10 miles long With enough ice that I was slipping my way up the hill
Thoughts on this one? I used redline d4 as the ATF, the transmission had only 20k on it. Seems to work fine otherwise.

What's the condition of your radiator/cooling system?
Since the AT uses the stock radiator to mainly cool the AT fluid, if its overworked, then your tranny will be more likely to overheat...

Radiator was new last year. Truck runs at 190 average according to scan tool.
Flushed all systems good. Used 4 cans of lubegard flush on it.
No codes in the TCU. I'm thinking 10 miles of uphill slipping in the ice coulda been enough for the factory setup, but this is still a first for me.

I know you said new but I figure it doesn't hurt to double check... Are the spaces between the radiator fins clean?

I've done the grade going up I-80 to Tahoe which is way more than 10 miles and didn't have cooling issues... How fast were you traveling?

Just put a Tranny cooler in it. I'll never run any AT with out one. Stock ones in the rads are just not enough IMO.

We've had several cases of false overheat indications due to water on the sensor. If you were in snow, especially with salt, I'd check that first. If you have a remote temp sensor gun, I'd read the temp on the tranny lines and see what they say.

Speaking of over heating..... what temp does or should the light come on at?

Something in the high 200's F, somewhere around 280*F iirc. There's one spec somewhere in the fsm, but I think it's an error, stating the temp in *C instead of F.
