 87' SWB Starting issues

Hi everybody, I finally got around to seeing if I could get my 87' SWB running after the PO said it was due to an electrical prob. I swapped out the corroded batt cables and cleaned up a few bad splices, dropped the batt from my 06' (daily driver)Dodge 6 cyl truck in and turned the key. The motor tries to turn over like it's using the last bit of power in a batt before it starts clicking. Almost like it's a dead batt but I know its not. When I put it back in the Dodge, it fires right up. Does the 4 cyl need more cranking amps then my 6 cyl Dodge? What else should I be looking at?

87' Monty bone stock (at the moment)
91' XJ waggy D44, spooled 4 link w/ coil overs front, Ford 9" shortened and spooled rear, working on a cage w/ buckets front and rear.

Howdy! It could be just a bad starter, or it could be that the solenoid isn't getting enough juice. You might run a wire direct for that just to test it. Folks have used Ford solenoids to get more juice to the starter solenoid. It's worth checking out at least.

Check the connections at the starter end if you haven't already.

Take the starter out and apart and clean the brushes, check the beating in that end. See if'n it's rusty or has rusty dust around it. . Might be dragging that much.

Thses starter have a history of bad contact across the solenoid. I have a test series for the starter, a search should turn it up. You use a set of jumper cables and a jumper wire to the solenoid.
Not responsible for advice not taken...

Thanks for the tip's guy's. Man that sucker is hard to get to. I tried to pull the starter tonite but didn't get very far. Look's like I need to pull the front drive shaft. I don't see how I can test the solenoid until I pull it because of the tight quarters. I'll try and find some time this weekend. Thanks again! <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/kewl.gif" alt="" />

Yeah its a bit of a stinker. rxinhed will tell you it can be pulled from above, but I couldn't get it. I used about 3.5 feet of extensions to get to the bolts from behind the transfer case, after pulling the driveline and just letting it hang. Don't pull it from the t-case or you'll be cleaning up an oil spill ;-) Be careful when you get both bolts out. It *will* fall out on its own! Let us know how it goes
