Got a new fuel pump installed today. It is a Bosch for an 87 carb model, it was $18 through Amazon, and I must say it is nearly like the original Denso.

Well, I took off in a happy state of mind and drove about 10 or so miles to a neighboring town and on the way back, the truck sputtered and popped and darn near stalled on a hill. !! It was running real rough.
I was was fearing I wouldn't make it home and, luckily, I was able to make two traffic lights on the green and run a couple of stop signs without hitting anything or anyone and made it home to my driveway and it died there. I can start it but it burns black smoke some and then a little white puff or two and it will not idle. Have to keep it revved and that isn't easy either. Something isn't right that's for sure.
I am thinking maybe the cold idle diaphram broke/cracked open or something. This truck has been bullet proof so far and has been treated well.
The oil looks fine, nice and clean, no signs of moisture or water, no smell of gas.
I did get a brand new set of NGK blue plug wires, so I'll take a look under the distr cap and inspect that. Also got a set of Denso plugs for the old girl.
I quickly popped the old leaky fuel pump back on to confirm that it wasn't a bad fuel pump I received.
This is just weird, put on a new fuel pump and all heck breaks loose.
Anyone know where the fuel filter is on the 87 2x trucks?

Well unlike you younguns.. I dont depend on this truck as my primary ride. So, this morning I started it. It was around 28 degrees. It started right up, and on fast idle it sounded normal, but as soon as the carb warmed up and kicked down it would not idle at all, and stumbled to a halt.
Interesting.. ;-)

Body Damage is Cool
The fuel filter is back by the fuel tank, just in front of it on the inside part of the frame. There should be a bracket holding it on.
I wouldn't think a replacement fuel pump would cause the filter to go bad, but you never know.
The cold idle diaphram (do you mean AAP diaphram?) might be part of it, though I would think it would run OK warmed up. When mine went bad I had trouble idling when cold.
You can pick up a carb rebuild kit cheaper than getting that one part from Toyota (or used to be able to) and it will have one in there.

Hey, thanks for that info Elbow.. great to know where the filter is. I also thought it's not a filter issue after thinking it over a little. And yes I meant the AAP diaphram but couldn't remember the name. I'll plug it off tomorrow and see if things improve. Need to get the car out of the garage and this pickup in it, which might be a little but of a trick. Or I'll need some help pushing the truck.
I'm leaning towards a carb issue.

Got my car out of the garage which wasn't easy considering the 87 pup was right behind it. Removed air cleaner assy. - lots of evidence of backfiring up through the intake. Plugs are carboned up, nice and black. All of them. This is beginning to look more like a HG or timing issue. Wonder if the chain is OK. No evidence of gas in the AAP hose. Carb float bowl is empty. Rotor and cap look used but Ive seen worse that ran fine. Pardon my slowness but I don't seem to have much motivation to tear into it at the moment. Truck only has around 190K on it, and is on second timing chain that was replaced around 125k or so. Looks like its time for a compression test.

Give the oil dipstick a whiff. If you smell fuel, then its time to be considering a carb rebuild. No fuel in the site glass points to your float going out, so your fuel is leaking straight on down; equivalent to a leaking fuel injector.

Float and needle part numbers are in the parts number sticky in this section.

I'd also refer you to Scerb's carb faq website, but looks like it's gone away.

A definite thank you for that info -- As of today, I put the valve cover back on and the air cleaner, and stated it up and it runs like it did before. Strange. I guess it didn't like sitting for 6 weeks which happened to be the coldest we have seen since 1919. After sitting in the garage for a few days, the truck is back to normal. Might have been some bad gas and coupled with the cold caused the carb to not work properly.
Still keeping my eye on it.
Kewl, no gas smell at all in the oil, and oil is clean, so was the top end under the cover. maybe the float got stuck or something.

Very nice! Might not hurt to run some Seafoam thru the tank. When you store it again, toss some Stabil in the tank; follow the instructions. Both available at your local auto box store.

With the cold wx you guys have had, you also more likely than not, have water condensed in the tank, so your fuel lines might've been a tad frozen. A bottle of HEET (methanol) also takes care of that stuff; use it all the time up here.

Ok, here's something I've never seen. I installed the new Bosch 68875 fuel pump back on the truck this morning. I just started it up and ran it to warm up. When I rev up the engine it is smoking like the rings are bypassing. But all I have done is replaced the fuel pump. Also, when had this Bosch off the truck to look at it , it had a lot of oil drain out of it where the lever comes out of the housing, much more than the pump it replaced. So, my logical analysis indicates that this pump is sucking oil out of the engine and burning it. This would also explain why the plugs are all black and why it ran like crap. It's oil fouling the plugs??
Unreal.
The old fuel pump is leaking a little gas externally and that is why I replaced it.

Never heard of that before! But the fuel pump is sitting right there with the lever running off the front of the cam...hard to put those puppies on wrong too.

Do you happen to still have that old pump to toss on there to see what happens? Might've gotten a dud out of the box, but that still doesn't sound right for what you're seeing.

Probably wouldn't hurt to pull the valve cover off again and do a quick visual down the front to see if anything out of the ordinary shows up. Just make sure the half moon gasket in the back is in place when you set your cover back on, or you'll have yet another oil mess.

I'd think about pulling the plugs and getting on the crank to give 'er a turn or two while watching the TC come around. That oil in the pump is weird....
