Side note, I can confirm that the transmission from the 2001 Cherokee fits the 1999 Gen 2.5 Montero 3.5L. This is the auto from the 4.0L cherokee.

You have to change the tails haft housing to the montero one, and the pan ,throttle cable, NSS, output shaft speed wheel.. All easy change outs.

You either need your old torque converter or to get a new one - the TQ listed by DACCO at the major parts houses is the wrong one. The pilot is horribly wrong.

The jeep transmissions need the front speed sensor (1998-) in order to work in the Gen 2.5 FYI. Without it your transmission computer will be pissed.

Danny put a cherokee trans in his Montero Sport, I think in Dannytuned SAS write up he went into detail about the swap. The Cherokee AW4 has lighter duty internals than the Montero AW3 from what i hear. Which would make sense since the Montero weighs a lot more than a Cherokee, don't think it would cause any issues. Otherwise it's the same transmission basically.

One of my friends swapped a late Cherokee AW4 into an old Comanche pickup that originally had a manual trans. He bypassed the computer with a manual shifter setup which you can do on pretty much any of those types of Aisin Electronic shift transmissions. So you could do the same in a Montero if you wanted to simplify things.

Got my trans from a 97 Montero Sport, then bolted it to a 97 Cherokee transfer case adapter and transfer case. The 97-99 Sports have the Aisin 30-43le, same as the AW4 in the Cherokee, used by Toyota as the A340. Got mine used with unknown mileage and it's been good to me for the last 5 years.

The data I have from rebuilders is that there are no internal differences in the 30-40LE or 30-43LE and that they are interchangeable in there entirety. You just have to watch spline counts and if you have the input speed sensor that you get one with it as well.

From a rebuilder standpoint there would be no internal differences, this is because when you rebuild something you don't care if the replacement parts are weak sauce as long as they work in the end and they are the cheapest possible (Jeep and light duty Toyota parts). Now most would never ever notice or never put their trans to work so hard that that it even mattered.
Having said that i'm sure there are internal differences seeing as how the OEM's didn't just put the same series of transmissions in the heavier trucks because that would have been cheaper. On to the heavier duty Toyota's and the Montero the change over may be slight but it is recognized by the rebuilder parts catalogues. It would be interesting to actually tear both down and see what is actually different, probably something like plastic bearing races vs steel or double vs single rollers I'm guessing.

Here are some good pdf's on the subject

rebuilder catologues

Cat-1

Cat-2

Toyota A transmission

I'm no way an authority on transmissions and i agree on the interchangeability between the Montero and the Jeep transmissions but i'm going to stick with there being something different (better) about the Montero transmission especially considering the differences in the Aisin manuals Toy vs Jeep 5th gear bearing like 87Monty showed us in his post . <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif" alt="" /> Mixtubishi trans

Body Damage is Cool
bringing back up from the dead. Did Mitsubishi put the A340 (30-40LE/AW4) behind the 3.0l? I'm contemplating a swap from a '97 Cherokee AW4 into a '92 Montero with a 3.0l, but won't consider the project unless easy-peasy. Basically looking at a '92 Montero with a junk transmission and a "free" AW4 from a friend that came out of a Cherokee he junked.

Yes. The '97-'98 (maybe some of the '99s) 3.0L Montero Sport had the AW4. Different adapter housing and output shaft. A couple guys on here have replaced newer (different) A/Ts with the AW4. There's a thread here that details some of the A/T swap.

Different output adapter housing (swap the Mitsu version for the Cherokee version), Cherokee 23-spline output shaft and a change to the output speed sensor. I believe you will also want the later '90s Cherokee AW4 - the '97 should be fine. TCU and harness for that A/T or go full manual shift. You'll find some information under my '99 Montero Sport Crawler Build.

I can't speak for the older 3.0L engines though. I think there's a difference between the 3.L pre-'96 and post-'96 that may require a different bell housing. Others will know more about that than I do. I only deal with the late '90s stuff. laugh
