Have owned both. Saw a fj-62 and got reminded of the time I owned my 88. Similar in size, motor and equipment, since I drove both I thought I would share my opinion of the difference and similarities:
Motor: Monty v6 vs Toy straight 6....loved the toy straight six, built after the orig chevy straight six, strong torq but slower that the monty v6. 0-60 in 2 hours. Both were fuel injected. Tranny: Monty 5 speed and Toy was automatic.
Drivability: Tie, they both are fun to drive, the monty dash is quirkier than the toy's seats are more comfy but I like the "speed" factor with the 5 speed. Appearance: Both are moving boxes, or bricks. Both have good fit, mine both have straight bodies, good lines. More comments with the cruiser. 4 wheel drive: Monty seems lighter, more nimble to manuveur, seems a bit shorter, toy transfer case seemed more solid. As a daily driver they both were fun, my MPG is about 3-4 mpg better with the Monty and parts cost about the same for both. Worth: Landcruiser worth considerably more than the Monty. Sold my Landcruiser in 2011, bought a f150 extended cab 4x4 which I sold later to buy the Monty. Results: Landcruiser probably a better investment, but I love and I'm the keeping the Monty. Anybody else own both ?
