That would not have caused the connector to melt. Leaving the headlights on just creates a normal current draw which will eventually drain the battery if the engine isn't running to charge the battery. Makes it handy to add a couple extra things too. I used this one Amazon ATC Fuse Panel. Instead of fusses I headed to Napa and bought bulk fusible link (3 different gauges), cut to similar length as old part, then crimped on blade ends. Has worked fine for 5 years. You can google the Mitsubishi fuss link wire color to cross reference it to the correct diameter. Napa colors don't match - but gauge (Mits calls it mm2) is what is important.
