So, after buying my Monty from the PO who claimed "it stopped running due to electrical problems", I went through the obvious and was able to get all the lights and gauges up and running, even the starter makes an attempt to engage the flywheel, but the motor just wouldn't turn over. As much as I wanted to hide my head in the sand, I couldn't avoid it any longer. So I grabbed my breaker bar, applied the socket to the crank pulley bolt and attempted to rotate the bolt clockwise. After a slight, very slight turn, It didn't budge. It will spin counterclockwise as if un threading (normal?) Conclusion, seized motor right? Is there any other method to confirm this dismal outcome? If a replacement motor is the inevitable answer, what would would be a better but uncomplicated upgrade to the stock 4 banger? Thank's for any help. I just wanted to go wheeling! #@!?*^&!

Step one would be to remove the valve cover and timing cover to see that you don't have:

1. a snapped camshaft
2. timing chain off the pulleys
3. secondary chain off the pulleys
4. broken distributor drive gear
5. ?

the unthreading feeling is probably your crankbolt backing out.

sorry to hear about your engine. that really sucks. check out this thread. could be the solution to your engine upgrade Hyundai Galloper

it's close by, has less than 60k mi on it, and the price is right. probably can't import it but you could strip it for an entire low mi spare parts kit. And it's the V6.

Agree... remove valve cover and see whats going on. Also pull the spark plugs and look in with a flash light and see if its rusty in there or what?

If its over 100k miles I'll take a guess at balance shaft seized up.

Want an easy swap/upgrade... starquest 2.6 is as easy as it can get.

Thanks for the tips guy's. I had the valve cover off, to be honest, just to replace the gasket due to obvious leaks. Didn't see anything abby normal. While I'm being honest, I am a novice when it comes to wrenching on vehicles. I really do admire you guy's that CAN and aren't afraid to try! I'll pop the covers and check those things out. Thanks again

i was a novice mitsu wrench when i found 4x4wire, too. between the service manual you can download and the guidance from other forum members, i've just about rebuilt mine from the ground up. and now when something goes wrong i have an idea what's going on. these vehicles are easy to work on. search the forum archives and ask a lot of questions. everyone is here to help.

good luck! <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/cheers.gif" alt="" />

NICE... I like that idea Malykaii. I'm going to look into that. Does your Starion have the turbo? Did you do the install yourself? What other parts (electrical, exhaust ect. ) should I also look out for on the donor car?

Thanks PaulO <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/kewl.gif" alt="" />

I turbo swapped by buying an entire starion for $700 and transferring it all over. It was alot easier as you see where it came from and where it goes. However, its not the cheapest way to do it. On a 700$ car you can expect sub par parts so I had to rebuild alot of stuff and buy replacement parts. The cheap way would be to join starquestclub and watch the classified. You would need the wiring harness, ecu, knock box, injector resistor, and anything else connected to it. Intake and stuff, exhaust manifold and stuff aka turbo. Intercooler too. Use 1988-89 parts. You can probably piece together everything with choice parts for under 500$. Rebuild your motor to turbo standards... use rock auto and wait for wholesale closeout pricing on parts and you can do it for 250$ As an example, I'm buying a turbo spec cyl head on starquestclub for 70$ shipped... how is that cost effective as I'd think shipping is more.

If you are considering an SQ swap, your first order of business is to read the Turbo Bible thread.

$700 for a donor car isn't all bad, depending... That's what I paid for mine, along with a slew of parts, including an extra tranny and 88-89 goodies. Like you said, some things did need rebuilding (besides doing the motor itself).
