my best guess is that the circlip at the end of the shaft is gone and the shaft has shifted out.

Pull the shaft, install the new clip, shove it back in and bolt it up.

I agree on the above.

The V6 won't direct swap unless you do the matching CV shafts & drive shaft as well. The Gen 1 V6 manual is the strongest of the Gen 1s. I did this swap in mine. Wrote up a how-to on here several years back.
