Need a Spot
You need a "wide block" 2.4L; one that came from a rear-wheel drive vehicle. Most front wheel drive variants of the 4g64 are narrow block and won't mate up to the transmissions of the Montero without an adapter. The wide block mounts to the same transmissions as the V6.

Let's not forget about the elusive twin-cam 2.4L. Only 1 year in the Galant (narrow block) but 160HP and 160lbs/ft. I do not know if the 2.3 DOHC head on the 2.4 block gives the same NA power, as most turbo these when making the conversion.

Most all the heads swap among the 4g63 and 4g64, so making one a dohc 16v is no trouble. The trouble arises with the water outlet, which is on the rear of the head, and you have to get creative.

I repeat, all this is covered in projectzerog.com, mostly pioneered by the starquest crowd. There are low profile outlets with remote tstats and a way to remove a freeze plug in the front of the head and install a tube there.

I thought the 2.4 wide block fit the 2.6 bellhousing pattern - pretty sure as a matter of fact. You can still use the km148 from a v6 with the I4 bellhousing, but you are still stuck with the km145 m/t, unless somebody has come up with a 2.6 bellhousing that will fit on the v6 heftier 5spd. I think the tranny came behind one of the diesels, so that's a possibility.

There was a thread in the last year on a V5MT and 2.6 with an export market diesel bellhousing. Seemed like the talk was it can work, but don't recall anyone saying they did it. Someone in the US nabbed a bellhousing. I want to say it was PLH...?

The water outlet on the rear might not be a issue if you have a v6 trany with the 2.6 bell. It sets forward about 2in more then the 2.6 trany.

Yes I do have a bellhousing and TOB fork that mates the 4cyl to the v6 (v5mt1) manual transmission.

It did come in the diesel (4D56t) Gen 2. Bought it in Thailand. Carried it back in my luggage last summer.

When's your next trip? I'll send you an extra suitcase and some money, seriously. A V5MT1 with Active-Trac behind a turboed 2.6... <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif" alt="" />
