Getting the Wheeling Fever
Had to replace the starter in my '87 Montero today. (What a PITA...) Anyhow, when I finished the install I hopped in to make the 60 mile drive home. The hydraulic clutch did something odd: the pedal had about 6" of freeplay; only the last couple of inches finally met resistance and disengaged the clutch.

I had no choice but to drive the thing -- but by the time I got home the clutch pedal was fine again. Checked the fluid level; it's OK.

What could have caused such odd behavior?

Your master and/or slave are going bad. I suggest replacing both at the same time, and just bleed them using aquarium tubing from wally world. Run it from the slave back into the master, and then pump until there are no bubbles. Works every time smile

Finally got the parts in (the M/C was backordered, oddly) and swapped them out. When I drained the old M/C it had black goo in the bottom; when I cracked the flare nut loose on the slave cylinder, what came out looked and flowed like partially used motor oil.

Bench-bled both the master and slave, flushed the line, adjusted and bled everything - and now the clutch pedal effort is a good 25% less than before!

That black goo was what was left of the seals ;-) Good job replacing! Isn't it nice when stuff works?

Good call and wise move to replace it. Glad it works great now.
