Had to replace the starter in my '87 Montero today. (What a PITA...) Anyhow, when I finished the install I hopped in to make the 60 mile drive home. The hydraulic clutch did something odd: the pedal had about 6" of freeplay; only the last couple of inches finally met resistance and disengaged the clutch.

I had no choice but to drive the thing -- but by the time I got home the clutch pedal was fine again. Checked the fluid level; it's OK.

What could have caused such odd behavior?
