As far as the interior goes, these are already pretty spartan. Unfortunately the upper vinyl layer on my driver side door is cracked right where I rest my arm. I'd like to just remove it and leave just the paint if possible on all doors. I can't tell if it's holding anything in place(inner wiper), so if removed what issues might I encounter? Is it really that simple? Clean some adhesive off and that's it? Are there ugly holes underneath?

I don't want to start ripping it out until I know what I'm getting into. The FSM wasn't helpful at all in this regard, I've been digging through it for an hour hoping it was in there somewhere. It's bugging me to say the least now that we had a nice sunny 70 degree day today.

No holes, just adhesives and paint. Too bad they're not available any longer.

So the inner portion is just pinned to the door by the wiper strip? Does the inner wiper strip just pop out with a crow's foot?

It might be tucked underneath the inner door wipe-strip from the factory, but they don't help hold each other in place, as far as I can tell. I ordered new inner wipes from the dealer for my '86, so I need to know how to remove and replace those as well.

I also have to replace the same section Capt. Awesome is referring to. Not sure what to use, however.

From what I can tell the inner wiper just clips through holes in the vinyl. I just popped one end of it off with my key to see how easy it would give, and it required little force. The biggest hurdle would be getting it out all the way, and then repositioned with the window still in the door frame by the looks of it.

I bought new pads for the glass-to-regulator contact points, and it looks like I'll have to unseat the window from those to replace them. Maybe while they're out, there will be a way to move the glass down farther.

Looks like you can get the inner wiper off the front windows without removing the glass, but it seams like the rear won't be as easy. I did the driver side front today, and it was a relatively simple thing to do. I probably won't tackle the rears until I am ready to replace all the rubber parts. No point in taking it apart twice.

I figured I would be of the same mindset of doing inside-door work only once myself. My windows rattle when they are half way down, so I ordered the aforementioned pads and the inner wipe (outer "belt" moldings are fine). I also got the little clips that connect the linkages between the door handles, door locks and the latch mechanism, since every now and then the driver's side door can't be opened from the outside because the control rod falls loose.

I already have a new set of lock cylinders to replace the door cylinders with new keys. Looks like someone was trying to access the vehicle in the past with a screwdriver and my keys don't unlock the doors any more.

I also ordered the miscellaneous little parts that holds the driver's side vent window to the pivot point and the real pain, the spring kit that holds the little window in the door. That'll be difficult since this '86 has power windows and the motor is directly in the way. I may end up removing the door so I can work on it while it is on saw horses or something. Lots going on in there. Might also be a good time to lay in some DynaMat or something similar, too.

Did you have any trouble finding the parts? I know my inner wiper needs replaced, and all of the perimeter rubber around the window frames. Just need to find a reasonable source and order them up already.

I'll always check Rock Auto first, but they typically don't get too in-depth with parts like these. Then I'll fall back on the ASA program to look up part numbers and plug them in to a site like Mitsubishiparts.net. Then order and be prepared to wait, as almost every single one of those parts will be on back order. And don't be surprised when they partial ship the order, only charge you for what they got in and they cancel the rest. It's not a perfect system. Some parts simply aren't around any more and sometimes even they don't know that until the stuff just never comes in.
