Getting the Wheeling Fever
So a few weeks ago I finally got everything back into place and went to start her up and well it turns over but never seems to fire. I took the air intake back off and checked the coils and at least 2 of them were bad so I replaced all of them. Still won't fire up so now I'm at a bit of a loss as to what needs to be checked.

I'll probably take it back to the timing belt and verifying that timing is correct, but before I do that are there any obvious things that I should check/verify to get this thing running again? I'm almost at the point where I'd bring in help just to get it done cause I plan on it becoming the wife's daily driver temporarily.

Body Damage is Cool
Cam & Crank sensors intact and connected? The crank sensor is easily damaged during a timing belt replacement.

Yep, that's a good place to start. I damaged two crank sensors during my rebuild debacle.

Ok I'll give that a check. Is there a way to verify it's functional or am I just looking for physical damage?

I was working on a way to test it a couple years ago, but never came up with anything reliable. Best bet is to look for physical damage. Mine got taken out the first time because the crank bolt had backed out and the sensor blade took it out. Second time was me being lazy and not moving the crank sensor out of the way while doing the timing belt for the sixth or seventh time. <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/lol.gif" alt="" />

Need a Spot
Hey Torchwood, I am having the exact same problem with my '95 Montero LS. Cranks strong but won't fire. I replaced coils, ignition module, even got the ECU rebuilt (it was corroded inside), have had 3 shops working on it over the last 4 months and none can solve the issue for more than a week before it stops firing again.

Did you figure out your problem? HELP!

Not yet, prepping house for sale and haven't had a chance tear the intake and accessories off again.

Getting the Wheeling Fever
Well on Saturday I finally made time to tear the engine back down and found that the timing was off, so after adjusting that and putting everything back on, it fired right up. Smoked like crazy but I let it idle for about an hour while I did yard work on Sunday, took it for a quick drive and now it doesn't seem to smoke at all (fingers crossed). Rattled like a diesel engine on Saturday but the standard racing the engine a few times fixed that.

The oil smells kind of gassy, and I'm going to assume that's from when I was trying to fire it up before since you could smell it was flooded after a few seconds of trying to start it up.

Tonight I got home and started it up and it died instantly, seems that it won't idle when cold (but did Saturday). Seems to run just fine once warmed up, so I'm going to take it in for a fluid change and possible emissions test (depends on how long the fluid change takes). Not expecting it to pass on the first try, but maybe it will. Even once warmed up the idle seems a bit low, on the 500-600 rpm side. I'll deal with the idle later.

Make sure the ISC is sealed, it is supposed to have an o ring. Lloyds truck ran like that for that reason.
