Well on Saturday I finally made time to tear the engine back down and found that the timing was off, so after adjusting that and putting everything back on, it fired right up. Smoked like crazy but I let it idle for about an hour while I did yard work on Sunday, took it for a quick drive and now it doesn't seem to smoke at all (fingers crossed). Rattled like a diesel engine on Saturday but the standard racing the engine a few times fixed that.

The oil smells kind of gassy, and I'm going to assume that's from when I was trying to fire it up before since you could smell it was flooded after a few seconds of trying to start it up.

Tonight I got home and started it up and it died instantly, seems that it won't idle when cold (but did Saturday). Seems to run just fine once warmed up, so I'm going to take it in for a fluid change and possible emissions test (depends on how long the fluid change takes). Not expecting it to pass on the first try, but maybe it will. Even once warmed up the idle seems a bit low, on the 500-600 rpm side. I'll deal with the idle later.
