Need a Spot
Hello all I just wanted to introduce myself and say thanks for such a great resource. I just purchased a 2 owner 1987 Dodge Raider with only 82k on it. Only thing I needed to do so far was tighten the throttle cable and get new shocks and replace the rear differential pinion seal. What are the best shocks for stock height and 31" tires? Welcome!
Super clean truck, and an amazing find with only 82K
A lot of us here are running the KYB Gas-ajust shocks with good results.
Again, welcome to the wire.

Welcome to the wire! I've got a similar rig so hopefully i can help you out with some shock feedback.

On my 2 door Montero with 81k miles i recently switched from KYB to Bilstein 5100's just in the rear and that was a HUGE upgrade. I've been running KYB's for years and been perfectly happy with them but i thought i'd try something different in the rear of my SWB to help those leaf springs ride better. My truck went from feeling like a truck on leaf springs to feeling like a truck with the smoothness of coils. It's so nice i'm going to figure out the part number for fronts and swap those out as well.

A friend gave them to me but i'll need to buy the fronts myself, about $70 per shock. I need to buy big bilsteins for the front of the pickup and for 14" shocks they're $90.

My '86 hasn't ever looked that good as long as I've had it. Really nice looking truck, silveraider, and welcome.

I've got KYB gas-a-just on all three of my current Monteros/Raider and I like them just fine. I have seen KYB's mono max or maybe it was the GR-1 shock listed as an application for some of the SWB's and those would likely be more of a street/highway friendly type ride, whereas the former ones are really firm on an SWB and a lot more forgiving on a heavier 95 SR, for example.

I'll have to check out Toasty's SWB to see what he's talking about. He even texted me about it because he's obviously so excited. Hey Toasty - were those shocks new, or even close to new? Any part numbers for us or are these for some modified rig of yours?

John B.

Thanks guys! I have been reading up all the tech articles to gain as much knowledge as I can. I was thinking about the KYB's as she has some monroes on it right now. I was looking for Bilstiens but can't seem to figure out what I need for the front.

They were used for like a week or something silly, and they are the same measurement as the stock shocks.

I only saw an application for the rear of the gen 1 and only the standard model shocks (yellow body)
