Any one know if the 2001 Mitsubishi Montero Sport front CARRIER/Diff 3.0 same as 3.5? Looking to install it in an Gen II for the 4.90

Thanks

I think you'll need a 3.5 Sport to get the 8" diff.

I am told that they will not swap directly if you want to use the CAD from the Sport. However, looking through the Sport service manuals, the diesel version that we never got looks like the same CAD setup as the Gen II Montero, but with the diff like the Sport. I plan to get them side by side and see what I can swap. It would be easier than doing gears.

On the rear, I am going to pull the Sport 4.90 third and see if I can drill it for the locker air line. That way I'll only have to swap the 4.90 ring gear onto my locked carrier, and not have to mess with the pinion.

You do realize that ring and pinions are matched sets, right? Meaning you cannot swap the ring gear without also swapping the pinion shaft/gear.

Yes, I will swap the 4.90 ring gear onto my locked carrier. Backlash will still need to be set. Just going to try using the 3rd member from the Sport, drill and tap it for an air line fitting, and use my air locked carrier with the matching ring gear from the same 4.90 diff.

Twice now you mentioned you are only swapping the ring gear, but you also NEED TO SWAP THE 4.90 PINION SHAFT. Ring and pinion SETS are exactly that, a matched set of a ring gear and a pinion shaft/gear. [/quote]

what he's saying is that he wants to swap the locking carrier into the 4.90 pumpkin by bolting the 4.90 ring gear onto the locking carrier, and then installing it into the pumpkin with the 4.90 pinion..thus not needing to remove the pinion from its housing.
