Don't worry, we won't beat you down like that too often (glares at the jeep guy). Generally 2" is either a body lift or cranking the torsion bars 2" and then new springs in the back. Its nothing too drastic. Welcome to the wire! smile

Body Damage is Cool
There are simple steps that require you to pay attention to what you're doing. A torsion bar crank requires trimming of the bumpstops, and the ability to loosen a couple of nuts, and know exactly how many times you've cranked on the bolt...
Mr. Jeep2Montero w/ 11 current posts non-withstanding, we're a good bunch of folks who don't mind being helpful.

However, if I see ONE more post asking "What's the biggest tire..." I might lose it!

Here's a link to an article I wrote a LONG time ago about cranking the torsion bars
http://www.4x4wire.com/mitsubishi/tech/minutemods/torsion_bar/

For the rear, find an early second generation Montero (1992-1996 or so) in the junkyard and pull the rear coils to swap into your shorty.

This will be the cheapest lift you ever do...

Best way to lift a montero is to run bigger tires. Tell us what size tires you want to run, and we'll tell you what you need to do.

Now if it were only so easy for the gen III. Already running a much larger tire but I want 2 inches in the suspension... epic fail.

The people here are very helpful, and generally patient and welcoming to newcomers. You have to "earn the right" to have human moments of weakness and being an ass. And even with that, those who do end up saying "sorry, was having a bad day" more often than not.

Yup. Noticing our Jeep friend himself is new! We appreciate the help, but please leave the policing to the moderators and more senior members for now.

Although we will ask new posters to search, we do so quite a bit more subtly. We DEFINITLY try not to trample all over new forum members when they ask their first few questions.

This isn't Pirate and we will keep it that way.

Well said ray, as always. Maybe I should change my name to montero2jeep2monteros&jeep... or not. Btw, the guys in this forum are the reason why I haven't been back to pirate in almost a decade. Always classy and policing our own.

I have done this to get a little more lift. Used 2" coil spring spacers from a Sequoia, Rancho RS70081, to get two more inches. Trimmed a little in the middle so it sits better on the top to the body. gave me lots of lift. My post may still be on here. Search by my name.
I did the whole thing when I did mine. Gen 2 upper arms w/ bump stops trimmed and torsion bar adjusted up. Did have to go longer on the shocks with he spacer in. Used shocks from a Bronco 83-96. Worked out good.

Sorry to thread hyjack, but...

Question regarding this... Can this same method be used for a budget lift on the rear of a 2001 Montero SPORT XLS 4wd? If not, are there coil springs or coil spring spacers I could pull from a junk yard vehicle for the Sport?

I will also search you for your post. Been doing alot of searching and reading here and on monterosportonline. Just trying to get my head wrapped around things and have a plan before I ever pick up a tool.

Just hard to weed out what will work on the SPORTS since they are so different and it seems there is not much aftermarket support. I know about OME, but we are on a tight budget presently.

I want to run 285/75r16s on the rig and am working on the best way to achieve clearance. I'm also checking into the body lift, but outside of 4x4crawler.com I have not found referanced what works. Folks say make your own, but from what? A toyota kit can be interchanged to get the 1.5-2 inch body lift, but not one says which vehicle or which year.

I will keep searching, but any hints would be appreciated A DIY would be even better. I did see the write up on the OME, Valley springs and torsion bars. smile
