Wow that's a lot of money. I'm going to be putting my 93 second gen with 2.8 diesel up for sale next month (the whole truck) for $6500 Canadian, so you can imagine it sounds high to me for just the engine.... If you want new, then obviously that's the way to go, but I regularly see whole/running diesel Pajeros on Canadian sites for about what you're being quoted for just the engine. Even if you just buy one for parts, at least you have everything you need, diffs, trans, etc. Maybe you've looked at this already and simply want a new engine? That's cool too.

As far as diff ratios, my 4D56 came with 488s and I feel that with any shallower it would've been under geared. I ran 33s on it, but still... My current Pajero with the 2800 diesel has 490s, and again, I wouldn't have wanted any (numerically) lower than that.

I'd definitely recommend an intercooler whichever way you go, and an EGT gauge. These little diesels will pull all day, but to their destruction if you don't manage the heat.

Not sure if any of this is helpful and you know what opinions are like, but enjoy your project!

Similar thread about gears

The Gen I V6 Montero uses a 9" ring gear in the rear, an 8" in the front.

The 4-cyl Monteros are confirmed to have 4.22, 4.625 (most common), and 4.875 gears.

The 4-cyl Montero/Raider and Mighty Max/D50 had the smaller diffs: 7.5" front, 8" rear...until at least '89 when the 2.6L was discontinued, I've no idea about the 2.4L-era MM.

The 3.909 are most common in 4-cyl MM. Spence is also looking for the 3.54 ratio 7.5" ring gear for his new truck, so you'll have competition.

Hi, John. Just caught your post. I put a 4D56T in my '87 Dodge Raider. I posted the process on this site, so here's the link:

http://www.4x4wire.com/forums/showflat.p...&PHPSESSID=

I bought the engine on eBay for about $1600. It was a long block, but had no accessories. I had to scrounge around for pulleys, starter, power steering pump, fan, etc. Finally got it all together and the truck runs well. Read what I posted and let me know if I can help. I have contacts for a lot of stuff. All the best, Bob in Maine

Need a Spot
Looks like I am going with a complete engine including wiring harness from a mid 90's Delica with 98k on the motor. It doesn't come with an intercooler but I know that is something that can be done afterward. I will post some photos when it all arrives. The price is about half of the new engine.

I will stick with the stock 4.66 diff and see how she drives. Getting the best MPG possible is a high priority so I will begin tweaking it out once she is up and running.

I've got a lead on a gauge cluster from an 89 Shogun MK1 diesel. If anyone has experience with using this to solve the tach problem let me know.

I put a diesel tach into my diesel swapped truck. I just used the old wire that was on the - side of the coil, and wired it to the hall effect switch on the IP. Works great.
