I have a 97 with a 90 motor. I had only to give the transmission CPU a tps reading. I don't throw any codes. Not sure if that helps...but... I have thought about putting the 5 speed auto on it. I was not sure about. What all the transmission CPU would need it looked to me that it would want a crank signal. I never looked all that close.

I'm trying to go from A/T to M/T so I don't keep track of the A/T TCU stuff other than to figure out how to circumvent it. smile

Still waiting for the '97 Montero FSMs. Those won't be in until the end of next week. So, I can't check anything unless someone can come up with electronic copies of Volume 1 and Volume 2. Not on Links.

The 5-speed didn't show up in the Sport until 2003 in the 3.5L Limited AWD. I have one and it has a PCM. The ECM and TCU are combined in one unit - the Powertrain Control Module (PCM). All the 5-speed A/T Monteros I saw this weekend were PCM based.

Integrating a '99+ PCM into a '97-'98 (or earlier) Montero or Montero Sport becomes increasingly difficult even if you replaced all the electrical harnesses in the process. A/T, A/C, fuel measurement, security, ABS, SRS - lots of things either stopped having separate control units and were integrated into the PCM or became tightly tied into the PCM. Sensors changed and are incompatible with earlier PCMs. Or sensors went away altogether.

I did notice on the '98 ECM that they had the "data link connector (2)" ECM flash pin. This is a really good thing as that indicates that the '98 ECMs are probably flash-able. If that's the case, maybe this would be a good summer/fall project. Pull a ROM and get the Tactrix guys to put something together. Once we have the ROM, all that has to be done is build the XML definition file to go with it.

Be nice to be able to disable ABS control and the two A/T lines. That'd leave the P/N switch and 4WD detection which are just wiring changes.
