I think your right that the split 2nd isn't quite as nice for three. Also loses the middle armrest for two. The trade off is much easier access to the third row.

Note that if you end up parting out and scrapping the 96, pull the cables from the second row seats. The one that that does the tumble (after it folds) will fail over time and they are not available from Mitsu. Have had two break myself. I have a few now on the shelf, having pulled some when at the u-pull.
