So I'm running a starquest swapped turbo montero. I'm assessing my options and want to get on this asap. I can just do the M/S rear axle swap, bolt in and be done... but I want more. So I want to build a hybrid rear axle with a locker and 4.90 gears. Problem is the front.

So can I get a m/s 4.90 front diff to fit up front of my gen1? (Saw some incomplete posts with attempts but never a follow up of yes or no) if not...

Who is selling 4.875s. I guess I only need the front but I'll buy the set. My sister is driving all around the country so unless your own n Alaska, shipping wont be needed. (I'm not paying $600 or something. I saw some for sale once around that price. With inatall thats half of what a shop quoted me to sas the truck)

Who is selling front 4.875

So what would be wrong with the conversion to a Wagoneer
SAS swap? Get the matching gear, get an e-locker, bam you're done !

Sas would be awsome but nyc is the limiting factor. No means of doing it. I rebuild my motor to starion specs right in the engine bay. Even if I was to take the motor out, cant do anything with it. Hence need to keep it bolt on. Like I cant leave it on stands or looking non road worthy over night on the street. No power tools or welder on the street either.

Shop 2 hours out quoted me $1500 for regeared wagoneer axles on a leaf spring front. Even if we actually were able to make it happen for that price, my rig is a rust bucket and cant see more than 5-8 years out of it. Hence bolt ons I can transfer to the next one or I can always sell off 4.875s. Cant exactly take a sas with me, so I'll drop the $1500 into a worthwile vehical/investment.

Just did a search on car-part. I'm chassing unicorns when what I need is available readily for $100. So what are my options gentlemen? I can simply swap this in? Eveything I read on putting in a 4.90 diff up front was inconclusive with mention of the slave cyl being in the way of the drive shaft. So a 1993 SR diff will kind of bolt in? Any write up I missed?

So then I guess grab a leaf sprung m/s air locked axle with disk brakes, which is a known bolt on. Find some 4.90 next generation gears and assemble?

Sound about right?

So I'm not paying $600

So I guess I'll keep my 4.875 4cyl LSD rear and front drop outs .. <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/rolleyes.gif" alt="" />...

No... Late gears will NOT fit in 4cyl front diff's or a GEN1 V6 diff ... Is what you want is AWD late M/S ... Non-AWD M/S have a axle disconnect that hits the oil pan and cross member.. TOASTY is the one that has the info on this ....I 'think' theres a way around it ... TOASTY is the man on this ..

Im not saying I dont have $600 to spend, I just dont feel its worth it to me personally. With odd ball rare vintage anything, there is no establiahed value. Its just what someone is willing to pay. I just dont see what I'll be gettingnfornsuch a price. With shipping a complete diff or just having gears sent and me having them set locally I'm looking at over $800. Add in a starion lsd and now its way past a grand. Thats not even counting the air locking rear. For $1500 I can have a pro shop sas the truck and that will outperform any lsd ifs front. Ifnyour serious about selling, I'm happy to make some serious offers.

Thanks for the heads up..I'll try ton pm him for info.

I know the gen2 gears dont interchange housings, just want tonget the whole gen2 diff in. I know people have put v6 diffs in 4cyl models with not much more than a drill and some extra bolts. Wondering if thisbis the same.

Why not... I can get any and all axles drum to drum (rotor to rotor..) for $165.00 from Junkyard-X in my town ... A Monty locker is not rare really ... Now a Toyota E-locker is rare ...Just be careful my friend that M/S has been rolled make sure the axle is not bent...

Sorry if I came across as rude on my last post... <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/frown.gif" alt="" />..

On a SAS... It would not be a better swap for 'me' .. It would turn a Ferrari into a Buckboard.. But I do not wheel in the rocks much...I do one hundred mile days on fast gravel.. Where the AZ Crew 'down the hill' do alot of rock hopping and will kill a IFS.. So you have to look at it on how you will wheel the truck and all..Not just cost... Theres two 4.90 M/S in Junkyard-X here in AZ ...I did a fast look around them sometime back ..And I 'think' theres two different placements on where the axle disconnect is at the front axle ... I have to do some plundering at the yard this weekend and will look closer...

Now will the communist state of NY/NYC let you even do a SAS and drive it on the road..?
