new parts can die, too. It's also possible the pump is blowing sufficient volume, but won't build pressure due to internal clearances too wide. I'd cut into the tank>engine line and tee in a pressure gauge. Crimp off the return line and see if the engine runs better, but watch the gauge so you don't blow up a line deadheading the pump.
