Getting the Wheeling Fever
Hi all,

Here is my first post after joining the forum with a perfectly running 1991 Montero LS... 2 days later, the Montero falls apart...

The other day I noticed a pretty bad coolant leak while parked at a venue. It looked like it leaked about 1 gallon at rest and turned off. I decided to take her home and watch the temp gauge carefully. It didn't overheat, however it did stall on the freeway. It suddenly lost acceleration and then lost all power.

The catch is, the battery was also toast. I suspected the alternator as the culprit. I replaced the completely dead battery and tested the Alternator. Those are both tip top and that system is back in order.

I replaced a bad upper hose that had a small hole in it. Thats not a great sign, but the leak has been contained...

Now, I took it for a test around the block and it doesn't want to accelerate. I hovers along fine at about 1-2000 RPM's, but when I hit the gas it fizzles out. It also does it at idle. It will rev fine at first but once I let off the gas and drop the RPM's down and then bring them back up, it doesn't want to. stalls.

The other factor is I was pretty low on gas when it died on the freeway, but it has gas.

May the coolant have damaged anything whilst spewing about? I am not sure where to stat. Perhaps the fuel filter?

Thanks for any help.

Matt

Not to be negative but the coolant sensor is on the topside of the motor SO if you run out of coolant you may not get an accurate temp reading (coolant not passing over the sensor) and might not know that you are overheating very badly. Lets hope that's not the case, the other possibility is that coolant on your timing belt caused it to slip a tooth and now you're out of time. This isn't likely but is less of a big deal on your motor.

unfortunately... you are probably right.

Reality is reality...

The question is, how do I get to the brass tacks of the issue without taking it to a shop?

After looking it over once again and walking by the engine while it was running I just noticed an inside wire in the alternator glowing RED HOT. Immediately turned it off.

What is going on here...

Guess what guys... replaced the fuel filter and it appears to be working now... at least around the block. got even better the more I drove.

The PROBLEM:
The new filter leaks. Ive tightened it all down as tight as I can go and it still leaks... I put the washers around each end of the coupler... Its not even a small leak, it is spraying out the side...

preferred filter brand?

Anything Fram makes is garbage. Wix has a pretty good reputation, the higher end NAPA stuff is pretty decent, and you know that the OEM Mitsu parts are great but pricey.

I just returned the leaky one for WIX... well this one is leaking as well. It is from the bottom line at the canister. I've cranked it pretty tight...

also, this did not fix the problem. Only felt like it worked fine this A.M... <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/frown.gif" alt="" />

So..is it the line that is leaking? Or how about a crush washer got something on it? Can't really be a filter if you replaced it with completely different unit and brand.

It was barely catching on one of the little crown making it feel super tight but not allowing it to seat fully flat. I adjusted it and got it just right.

Still glad I got the WIX... <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif" alt="" />

Now back to the problem... ugh
