Hey all, I will make it quick. About a month ago decided I had enough of the leaking gear oil into the rear brakes due to bad outer seals.
Had a machine shop press new bearings with the new outer seal. I installed a new inner seal and fresh lubricants.
Now, yesterday driving home I notice a grinding noise as if the bearings are dry or even worst gone bad. Could it be that the machine shop did not set them as far as they were supposed to and when I assembled it back together the extra pressure has mess up the bearings? That is one of my theories. Oil level is good after 2.5 qts and the finger tip measuring method, you know.
I will be taking apart in a few minutes, AGAIN.

After close examination my problem were the front brakes. I guess I got home so tired that I jumped the gun and misdiagnosed.
This morning, after my post, I pulled out of the garage and as I applied the breaks the noise went away but returned when released and the same when repeated the scenario.
So y'all., the problem were the front brakes. I will post before and after pics of when I replaced the bearings the first time.

Was it likely that the machine shop did not set them correctly?

Yeah, that makes absolutely no sense with new bearings why they would burn up. They get pressed down to a specific point, it's pretty much a no-brainier.
89 SWB, V-6 5SPD, OME Shocks, 16.5X37's, 2"BL, SR axle, Gen2 brakes, Lincoln w/Superwinch
Were the bearings greased before assembly? If gen 1 axles are like gen 2, no oil should get to the bearings. Strictly bearing grease. I just did the seals and bearings in my gen 2. Real pain! I used OEM Mitsubishi bearings which came pre-packed with grease.
Page 3-18 in the FSM shows bearing then seal from the inside to the outside. The axles that I have from the 4-cyl appear to be oil bath for the axle bearing, rather than grease.
Well, I assumed they were oil bath bearings but found on the MFS that they are supposed to be greased packed. <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/scared.gif" alt="" />
The machine shop also said that I need the outer washer, on the outer side of the bearing. You know: seal/ washer/bearing/ washer/ lock washer and nut. That first washer is nowhere to be found, not in MFS neither on the ASA.
I believe that he is mistaking some parts.
I have attached the parts from MFS.
Heading to the machine shop, will keep you posted.

In my world ..(declaimer) ... Its far from a 'no-brainer'..All Mitsu rear axles 'I've' been into witch is a lot of them are a 'tapered roller bearing center drive axles butting dropout unit".. The axles are not oiled by the hypoid gear oil ...They are grease packed as in the way the front wheel bearings are ... And do to the TRB on the axles they meet in the middle at the button block and are shimed for the right clearance at the outer alxe bearings ... If they are not shimed right they will cook or leak gear oil into the axle bearing...And do to them being a 'tapered roller bearing center drive axles butting dropout unit' they are a very strong unit...Last I check the 'ring' you could not buy .. The few axle bearing I have had to replace the bearing was crazy expensive and I had to machine up a new ring on my lathe...I would just get a used axle with a good bearing ..Re-grease it and shim it up and be done with it ...Its rare to kill a Mitsu axle bearing ...Now there maybe a Mitsu axle that I have not had my hands in thats not a TRB set up...And at one time there was a half a$$ after market ball bearing that was sold and did not work do to ball bearing cant take a side load..As in a Toyota axles that eat ball bearings like candy...
So that ring or spacer between the bearing and the outer seal do exist? <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/scared.gif" alt="" /> Do you know the dimensions?
