I thought the old home and commercial systems used R22. The new stuff is 410, environment friendly. Don't know the chemical compounding but the names are different. Maybe you could use R22 in auto system but you'd need the characteristics to charge properly.

Apparently propane will work, if you want to drive a bomb.
