Getting the Wheeling Fever
Looks like all the upgrades pertain to the V6 model. Is there anything that will bolt up to the 4-cylinder SWB?

Searched, but didn't see anything posted.

I have a seized up right front caliper and went to do the upgrade, only to find the geometry wrong.

Thanks for any help.

There is nothing wrong with the geometry.

Perhaps a short list is appropriate to explain the change to V6 Gen I parts:

1. V6 Calipers
2. V6 Caliper mounts
3. V6 Rotors bought new
4. Sundry hoses
5. V6 vacuum booster
6. V6 master cylinder
7. short pipe that comes off the front of master cylinder
8. your brand choice for new brake pads

The caliper mounts are the foundation for this change, and the two modes of brakes (4- and 6-cyl) use different pieces. You may be able to use the 4-cyl MC and booster, but the V6 parts are system matched. Hoses have different fittings.

I bought Gen 2 calipers and brackets. When installed, the pads and caliper sit out away from the center too far. The top of the pads is about 1/2 to 3/4 of an inch out from the top of the rotor. The pad does not make full contact with the rotor.

Since from what I've been able to research about the parts, it appears that the rotors are the same diameter (around 275mm), I can only conclude that the geometry of the swap is wrong for this vehicle.

Do I need V6 caliper brackets with my Gen2 calipers? Is that what makes the geometry work?

Yes. Gen 2 brackets. Did you install Gen 2 rotors? '95/'96 SR...

I'm not sure if #5, #6 & #7 from RX list above is needed. I didn't do those, although mine is an '88. The MC bore is the same from the '88 to the V6. Hoses are a must.

Rotors:
Gen 1 4 cyl: Diameter [mm]: 255.0; Brake Disc Thickness [mm]: 20.0

Gen 2 (SR) Diameter [mm]: 276.0; Brake Disc Thickness [mm]: 24.0

Finish it with some braided sst lines:

2x RUS-656242 (Front Hoses)

Rear:
RUS-656242 - check the length.

3x RUS-641411 (10mm to AN3 adapters)

The peace you need is the 'wheel hub' ... The 'wheel hub' is why the rotor is off set ...

I disagree, I've done the swap. The wheel hub is the same. If you do use SR rotors, you will need shorter disc mounting bolts because the SR has an inset on the rear for the ABS ring.

I just went on rock auto and bought 96 SR calipers with brackets, pads, and rotors. Everything just bolted right up to my 88 2.6 truck. I had to switch the brake hose holds things between the right and left, and I feel I used a zip tie for something. Otherwise all went well. Got new brake hoses too. Well worth it.

88 Montero, StarQuest turbo, Kormex 5speed +tuff-pan w/phoenix f. stage2 clutch, 4in lift+33' tires, 4.875 lsd, short-throw shifter, Aisin hubs, SR big brakes, gen2 uca's, elantra alt, and so much more... 16g turbo w/hardpipes + 4.90 locking disk-brake axle soon (maybe lsd or aussie front??)

Looks like that's what I needed. Didn't realize the rotors were different. I thought I had measured them close enough (impossible when they are on). I'll have to revisit this and see where it goes. I got some wrong information when I tried looking this up.

Thanks!

you can do gen 2 LS or Montero Sport brakes cheaper (and less overkill) . The rotors are the same as gen 1 V6. but you get 2 piston calipers and more square inch coverage area pads than gen 1 V6.

Thanks, but yes, that is what I purchased. 1998 Montero Sport rotors, pads, calipers. I need to get a spindle nut socket, and also some shorter bolts for bolting the new rotor to the hub. Ran out of time last night - everything closed at 5pm.
