I'm a b level tech and worked for a few years at a repair shop known for euro cars with an emphasis on Audi.

Also, I have a secret appreciation for bmw, my dad had a 7.

Case by case on model and engine, bmw took a turn right after 2000ish 2004 ish.

Like the x3 only comes in x drive. BMW transfer cases are fragile, very fragile. The n52 motors, unlike their amazing previous gen strait 6, suck. Electric water pump for start, that seams to fail in 50k miles. The head bolts literally snap by themselves. With all the timing work and all, its a $5k from an indie shop and more at a dealer.

Shoot for a pre 2000ish 3 or 5 wagon in strait six flavor. Excellent reliable cars. Been eying some fives myself lately.

88 Montero, StarQuest turbo, Kormex 5speed +tuff-pan w/phoenix f. stage2 clutch, 4in lift+33' tires, 4.875 lsd, short-throw shifter, Aisin hubs, SR big brakes, gen2 uca's, elantra alt, and so much more... 16g turbo w/hardpipes + 4.90 locking disk-brake axle soon (maybe lsd or aussie front??)
