Hey all. Super pumped to get a new 89 raider v6 auto to play with . I have been missing the Montero fun. Anyways drove through puddle after testing ride out and poof. It stallef. Now it won't start. Can't tell if it's not get gas or too much. Any ideas?

long time lurker, thought I would contribute for a change. Based on your signature, I'll save you the frustration of reading over the common advice that is given.


I know there is a power transformer thing right inside the passenger footwell. It powers at least part of the ECU and can prevent you from starting. It will just crank and crank if that thing stops working. Maybe someone else can chime in on this specific piece.

Hey, Terry, long time no see. First, check for spark. Pull a plug wire, insert phillips head screwdriver in the end, and hold it 1/4" away from engine iron, and crank the motor. Should see a hot, blue spark jump the gap. If no spark, unplug the wires from the coil and the black sqaure thing on the coil bracket and spray with wd40, then wash with white vinegar to clean up the terminals, and do the same on the distributor. Remove the air cleaner and see if the element is damp. If so, replace.

Walcome back ... Lots of Mitsu's has a o-ring on the Dizzy ... Your does ... Very water waterproof when the o-ring is there ... Very NOT waterproof if its gone ... As MrFE has said look at the dizzy optec needs cleaning...

I didn't have the Dist. O ring and was washing the engine a blasted soap in the dist. It didn't kill it. But for a year it always idles rough. I took distrib apart and found crusty dry soap blocking up many of the little slots in the disc. Get the O ring ad don't get all stupid like me and blast soap everywhere.

Hey all thanks for tips. Still haven't had any luck. Got zapped a little when checking for spark. So that works. No water in air intake. I don't know these v6 models too well. But I'm going to see if gas isn't flowing today. Do the v6 models have fuel pump issues?

You should be able to smell unburned gas at the exhaust if you crank it a bit.

Pull all the plug wires from the plugs. Soak plug and wire end with wd40. Do one at a time.

To test for spark (what were you holding when you got zapped?), use a phead screw driver. Pull the coil wire from the dizzy, insert the phead into the wire, and crank the truck, holding the shaft of the screwdriver a tad under 1/4" from the coil bracket. You should see a hot blue white spark. Repeat for each plug wire. If all are sparking, you have water in the fuel. There's a drain plug on the tank. Remove and drain around a pint into a clear jar. Look for water on the bottom.

The smell test at the tailpipe usually means you have spark, but it's not getting to the plugs for some reason. The ecu will not inject fuel unless it sees a spark signal at the coil - terminal. If you have total spark failure, no fuel gets injected.

Listen at the open gas filler as the key is turned from off to on. The fuel pump should run for one second or so.

Give her a shot of starting fluid ...If the spark is right and in the right timing it will try to run ...That will say if its spark or fuel ...
