The timing belt broke in my 89 v-6, a.t., my questions are what all should I do and replace, Rock auto has the belt, tensioner and water pump kit by Gates for $60, I was also thinking replacing both radiator hoses while were in there.Anything else I should do or replace while I'm at it? Is Gates a good product? Anything else I should expect or watch out for.Its a non interference engine correct? Thanks METALMOVER

I say since your draining coolant, change all the hoses. Even any bypass or heater hoses there are. I say refill with fresh coolant.
Maybe change all your belts since they are coming from off anyway.
Check for any oil leaks so maybe you can order cam seals or a front main seal.
88 Montero, StarQuest turbo, Kormex 5speed +tuff-pan w/phoenix f. stage2 clutch, 4in lift+33' tires, 4.875 lsd, short-throw shifter, Aisin hubs, SR big brakes, gen2 uca's, elantra alt, and so much more... 16g turbo w/hardpipes + 4.90 locking disk-brake axle soon (maybe lsd or aussie front??)

I bought a gates water pump for my 90 v6. I haven't really tried it out much yet but it looked to be of good quality. Had a metal impeller and came with the o ring needed for the water pipe that goes in the back of the pump housing. I took my intake off to get to make getting the pump back on much easier. If you do that the intake gaskets should be changed as well.

Beware of the pump/heater hose o-ring ... <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/zombie.gif" alt="" />... At times its for the Dodge FWD cars and vans in the Raider/Montero kits and is not right ..

12v 3.0 is NOT an interference engine.
If you plan to replace the front main seal, buy a new timing belt crank sprocket. Most only come off after you drill and split them. No room for a puller, and it's made of powdered metal so you can't really drill and tap for a steering wheel type puller. It's cheap. If you try to pry it off, you'll bugger the oil pump seal lip, and you'll cut the new seal on install, or crack the pump body.
Not responsible for advice not taken...

Ill look and see if there the same part#, on vans and the Monteros, I hope not, I dont think my front crank seal is leaking, my valve covers are and if im doing that Ill probably have em do the valve guides, grrrr getting more expensive.....

This is the part number for the gates water pump I purchased that came with the correct o ring for the montero 43551. This is the oem mitsubishi part number for the o ring itself MD030763 A complete gasket kit would be the way to go if you need valve cover gaskets, upper and lower intake comes off for that too. Id suggest putting your new timing belt on before you start taking things apart too much and do a compression test on all cylinders.

DO THE CAM AND CRANK SEALS! If you don't you will regret it. Sometimes the crank gear comes off. The only one that I ever broke was when crank bolt broke- Also replace crank bolt with updated one. I got replacement off a Diamante
