So back in the day, I sold my 89 4Door Monty (Betsy #3) to a buddy, who chopped it very nicely (search for "Beer and Cutting tools"). He had it for a long time and then sold it to another buddy of mine. We just found a 90 Montero for sale locally, which is a rarity in itself. Needs an ignition module or something, but it is CHEAP. It'd be a great candidate for a L/U torque converter swap into Betsy #3. But how can we tell for sure? I remember it being A44D versus A44DL? Is this right? Any chance there's a tag we can find on the tranny that'll say this?
A search of our history here gives me the impression that they changed somewhere in the mid 90 model year, and that all the 91s had them. This one's a 90. Wonder how we can tell definitively? It it was for sure a L/U model, he'd probably buy it and swap lots of stuff over.

I really don't know for sure, but perhaps the VIN number and ASA can help?

Look for a red tag on the left side that says model number.
03-72L is the lockup version, 03-72 is the non lockup unit.
87 Turbo Intercooled Raider, roller cam, torsen rear diff, LSD front diff, lockup auto with modified converter, V6 brakes, low transfer case gears...

Thanks Kev, I was hoping you'd post. So on the LHS of the trans itself? Excellent.
Funny, if he doesn't buy it, I'd almost grab it myself. Its been 10 years since i've had a gen1, and with the Paj selling last week, and the gen3 in a shop in another province for a few more weeks, I'm kind of feeling antsy... could fix and flip it? Maybe I'll go have a look...

I've sometimes found that tag missing. I think the non-L/U had a P code, and the L/U had an R, also on the LHS of the tranny itself.
Not responsible for advice not taken...

To the best of my knowledge..... NO GEN1 4 cyl KM148 (A44D) had a lock up converter.
The V6 is a little confusing... The 89 manual makes references to a lock up converter but it is not shown in the hydraulic diagram.
I have seen photos of 89 transmissions and they appear to have a lockup converter.
The free tech website link on the chat board had a TSB that says the lockup converter was introduced mid year in 90.
If there is a P in the serial number it is supposed to be a lockup converter. For example mine says "89fP63984" on the tag with a model number of 03-72L (that should be the model number for a lockup converter).
the first two numbers are the year it was made (89) the letter is the month A: January, M: December, ect... The P is the classification of type P= lockup converter(V4Aw2), N = no lockup converter (AW372). The "6" is the mitsubishi head number. The last four digits are the serial number.
This tag is located on the drivers side of the tranny just above the oil pan.
If you are replacing a tranny always try and get the "P" version since it will give you an easy 1 mpg better highway fuel economy. Also with a bell housing swap the P tranny if should fit the 4 cyl... I will know within a few weeks once I do the swap. I am rebuilding my E bay tranny this weekend.

So if I'm reading this right, the v4aw2 is lockup, aw372 is non-L/U? My buddy bought the truck today. I was thinking about it, but it had a ton of oil around the engine/trans, windshield was destroyed, tires were rotted, etc. too much work for a resto for me right now. Not to mention it was a non-runner. Turned over but wouldn't start... Appeared to be getting fuel but... Anyways my bud bought it as a parts rig. Every paneL is straight, lights are all good, interior is intact, etc. and we may be able to grab the torque converter as well...
