Wanted to run engine long enough to make sure no leaks from oil,,,rear main seal and oil gallery plugs.
No radiator in and crossovers left off,
filled with antifreeze mix to the bottom of T-stat , useing a radiator hose looped from water pump housing to T-stat. Leaving enough air in hose for some expansion.
Looped a hose on pipes at rear of engine for heater hoses,,air in that hose too.
Water will circulate thru bypass hose.
.
Started and ran rough untill I turned distributor and to smooth out..
.
Total run time about 5 min. Temp. gauge not quite 1/2 way up to operating temp.
.
Bled off pressure at Radiator hose ,,,not much built up,,,water not hot enough to say ouch.
.
Hope I didn't run too long without load to seat the piston rings.
.
things are OK , I guess...onto to exhaust system install, pulley , alt., and then try to solder up my radiator.

Great job getting it running. That's awesome. Post some photos when you get a chance.

.
Sorry no pictures from this Neanderthal onto the forum,,,I can barely get them to go on F.B.,,sometimes.
.
Stayed up way too late and can't move today.
Last night I put cross over on,,
but I need to revisit that cause my nut apearently aren't locking thread type. Hopefully NAPA will have some.
Put the pulley/ fans brakets, P.S. pump, alt. on.
Still hopeing I didn't mess up on the ring seating thing. I don't really comprehend what happens with that,,like does the metal expand and cure or something?

You are trying to get the rings to lap,,mate ...seal ..ware in to..... The cylinder walls........Rings are new and rough....Cylinder walls are new and rough.....We need to get them lapped seated and worn in to each other......Yes ...no..???????

The rings always sit against the Cly walls ..right ... But 'under load' they REALLY set ,,push..plant,,,against the Cly wall....Its not a RPM thing its a load thing...Idling has no load..(pushing of the rings onto the fire wall...hard...)...Just go 'zipping' around town is how I start a new break in ... I'm luck I leave in a smaller town ..I have friends in town ..I just zip around town keep the RPMS up driving near friend homes ..If I have a problem someone is near to stop at and get help..I do that for an hour then off to the airport in town and hot lap around that ..LOL...Do to my job I can do that .. .. Home to cool ...A look over the up the hill to I40 to the Snow-cap for lunch ...I do stop alot look it over ...

Just dont let it idle to long and keep it under load youll be fine ...

Update,,,and my latest screw ups
.
Thanks for that excellent explaintion on those rings, haztoys. I'm just hoping all the idling time I ended up having before hard underload drive didn't negate proper ring breakin.
.
Ok, Started engine and drove around 2 miles under light load on pretty flat road.
Back in driveway I let idle and set timing ( it took me longer than it should, idled good 15 min.. Shroud isn't on.

Temp. gaugue slightly above normal op. temp. Turned off engine.
------Screwup------
.
Noticed pin hole leaks in Radiator tank upper seam bubbling coolant,,so feeling axnious , I turned Rad cap to blow pressure into reservour.
I went Too Far with cap and went past notch #1 - to res.- and went to notch 2,,,and coolant blew out from under cap--big time- big mess. No rag , could not shut it off.
Let everything cool for 1/2 hour, then slowly added coolant.
Motor hold about 1 3/4 gallon (I think) and rad holds about a gallon.
I had to add 3/4 gallon to replace that which boiled out.
Bottom hose seemed all most empty before refill.
Hoping 1 3/4 gallon was still in engine , as coolant comes out of top of water pump, coolant hopefully was still in water pump, central pipe, heads and block. I know the was no coolant left in intake manifold with its' poorly located temp gauge sensor.
.
I then drove about 75 miles that night over and around the hills. Everything seems OK.
.
???????So how much damage do you think I did by releasing all that pressure and heat all at once ?????????????

I was gonna do emmissions test today, but put it off.
I have an inconsistant miss that occurs irregularly through idle to 3000 rpm. Swap cap and rotor and did ohm check on wires. Stumped.
Figure missing it will puff unburned gas and I'll fail. Onlyget a 1 day move permit. CA just expects you to go buy a preus if youbrake down instead of fixing it yourself. Already got a ticket doig a test drive on my radiator patch,,,even with my move permit.
.
Anyway, if you read my post above about taking the rad cap off all the way and boiling over,,,
well , if you think like me,,,I probably cracked new heads or block and thats my miss ...

First off ..You need to move ...I left Calif do to there BS and that was 20 years ago ...I'm sure its way worse now ...

Could you have a bad spark plug ... Does it miss at idle ..If it does miss at idle ... Do the redneck scope on the old girl and see what cyl is missing ... If the motor is pumping coolant in a cly it will 'steam clean' a plug ... You will have plugs with color on them and have one very clean and white ... Do to the fact that the coolant turns to steam and cleans the plug ...
