I've done some rebuilding of front suspensions, but I've never taken apart the upper control arms on a Gen 1. I know the upper ball joints are pressed in/out, and I'm staying all Gen 1 on this, so I'm also going to replace the shafts as a whole, which I've never done.

Do they just bolt out/in? I have air tools, so I'm not too put off by heavy duty fasteners; just never done it. Any pointers? I "think" I'm pretty good about keeping alignment shims where they belong and eyeballing camber and toe, but was basically looking for tips on the mechanicals of it all.

Man, I sure hope I don't end up having to replace the lower rear control arm bushing (the one that's in the frame). I've done those and I don't like it!

Thanks in advance.

You'll need a 27-mm socket, or some such large size. I use a long handle 1/2-drive ratchet with an air socket to pull the UCA bushings. They are super easy. The getty up in the hitch is trying to slide the a-arm out over the camber adjustment bolt holes. The right side can be changed in the chassis without pulling out, left side has more things in the way.

As for the shims, if you haven't thought about it already, punch or scratch a couple alignment marks in each along with matching ones on the surface they press up against. It should make it easier to keep things aligned.
