Am I screwed? Valve damage? The 3.5 engine is an interference engine, BUT if you're lucky there may not be any damage. Any loud metal against metal sounds? <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif" alt="" /> It didn't sound bad at all, just cranked but wouldn't turn over. I finally pulled codes and saw I was getting a cam position sensor error, so I pulled the top cover on the driver's side...sure enough, shredded belt.

I would not do a compression test. A valve may be stuck extended, and you could do more damage. What speed was the engine at when the belt broke? This will give you an idea of how much damamge was done.
Ultimately, you'll have to pull at least one head, probably both, before you know what it's going to cost. I don't recall exactly, road speed was about 45, so not terribly high RPMs. I was probably in 3rd or 4th gear. Not accelerating. One head is almost out (pass side), but I can't clear the exhaust, which is unbolted. Also I haven't removed the accessory bracket, but I guess I'll have to. Lots of little clips and brackets to keep track of on top of the engine O.o. I haven't had much time to work on it but will have that head out tonight! If it looks okay, then I'll pull the other side, if it has damage, I'll look for a set of good, used heads.

If you take the exhaust apart at the under truck wye, where the pside and dside converge, it should be a lot easier to pull the head. I pull the head with the exh mani still attached.
Not responsible for advice not taken...

I started to, got one nut removed, can't get to the other one with a long enough wrench. I have Cali emissions so there's these pre-cats in the way. I swear everything I need to get to on this engine requires 5 other things to be removed.

The inner nut is blocked by the starter and pre-cat (which also makes getting the starter out a real nightmare). I can get a socket on it, but not with a straight shot to it from underneath. Pain in the butt.
