Gen I alternator / water question #1074708 10/15/14 01:50 AM

I have an 87 Gen I with the 2.6Lengine. As you all know the alternator is near the bottom of the engine on the left side.

Somewhere along the line I bumped into info that indicated the alternator EASILY suffers from damage if it gets wet. Like doing a water crossing or even just driving in a hard rain.

Is this correct? Anything we can do to help prevent damage if it is correct?

Thanks!

I've been through water crossings and many heavy storms with my Raider. No problems with alternators during said occasions.

Thanks Rxinhed! I could not imagine why, or even how the water damage story could be correct. Not that I'm planning on water crossings, but it is always good to know what might end up creating problems.

Body Damage is Cool
I've ran in 3' of water in both the 2.6's quite a lot and never had an issue like that. Old wives tail I'd say.

I've had mine in deeeep water a few times without issue.

My feeling is issues arise if water is muddy or has a lot of crap in it, then the alternator becomes clogged.

Would recommend flushing with fresh water and then blasting it with wd-40 after a day on the trail.

On my Gen II, I worry more about the power steering pump. Both times my alternator has died its been from ps pump leaks.
