My guess, the heater core is leaking and the owner just let it go which resulted in overheating the engine and blowing the gasket. I'd check out the heater core.
But otherwise, can't go wrong with it for $500. Good find.

Quick question, Can a Montero Gen II with a 3.5 easily tow the Gen I?
Can you tow it with a tow bar? If so, what settings? Neutral/Neutral?
Or would a tow dolly or a flatbed be better? If tow dolly would we need to undo the drive shaft?
Any help here would be amazing.

Tow bar should work. IIRC you'll need to disconnect the shaft at the rear axle. and make sure it is in 2wd.

You have to remove the driveshaft if you use a tow dolly, and you can not back up with a tow dolly. 12 & 14mm combo wrenches and a ratchet strap to tie it up (with forward tension to hold it in the tcase) are all you need. The a/t has no neutral position in the tcase (or at least, no detent for neutral), and while it's possible to "balance" the shifter in a neutral position between 4hi and 4lo, any little bounce and it can drop into gear.
I think you can rent a flat bed trailer to haul it, which is what I would do.

So this Montero is a 5spd. To flat tow, would I still need to disconnect the driveshaft?

T-Case in Neutral detent, Transmission in Neutral. Flat tow OK for 5 speed.
