This is pure speculation but I think JohhnyB is running into some sort inadvertent grounding issue. My new 1989 Raider operates power windows without the engine running.

In regards to differences in wiring harnesses, I have not determined that yet. I have completely taken the interior apart on my new raider (equipped with power windows) and will take out my interior on my old raider (equipped with crank windows) over the course of the next couple of days. I will determine this shortly.
