I had to shim the carrier/ring gear 1/4" on the Starion lsd to use the monty gears. ARP makes good hardened bolts long enough to install it.
I have the ARB rear locker. Gen 1 D50

1) 86 and back starion (and flat side 87s) diffs fit the front 7.5 truck carriers but require shims. 2) 88/89 starion diffs fit the 8 truck carriers. 3) 87 wide body diffs fit the 8 truck carrier but accept the 7.5 axles. *If any of the above is incorrect, correct me before I start buying parts. Thanks
So mag00, 1) is what your describing?
And for me the simplest and cheapest thing would be to swap in a v6 8inch and do 3)
88 Montero, StarQuest turbo, Kormex 5speed +tuff-pan w/phoenix f. stage2 clutch, 4in lift+33' tires, 4.875 lsd, short-throw shifter, Aisin hubs, SR big brakes, gen2 uca's, elantra alt, and so much more... 16g turbo w/hardpipes + 4.90 locking disk-brake axle soon (maybe lsd or aussie front??)

Mag00,you just used the stock starion diff or did you mess with the disks? How's the driving impressions, if you don't mind me asking. Thanks.

Jdavis... So you say that the steering feels heavy. That I don't mind. Does it handle well and predictably in the snow? I'm mostly worried how it will drive at highway speeds.
My rig wears multiple hats. Its my daily driver, off-roader and tow rig. As a daily driver it sees anything from Seattle stop & go traffic to wide open 80 mph highway speeds, lots of wet rainy conditions, occasional snow & ice on city streets... As a tow vehicle, it regularly pulls my 16 ft camper through the mountains at highway speeds or across questionably maintained forest service roads in all kinds of weather conditions.... As an off-roader, it's seen forest service roads, 4x4 trails of varying difficulties (easy to most difficult), some light rock crawling, deep snow, deep mud, water crossing, step hill climbs..... I can say over the 3 years the locker has been installed, its not been unpredictable. When not in 4W drive would not even know it's there besides the occasional clicking. I've never had an incident with it during daily driving. In 4W drive it fairly predicable. Besides the heavy steering, on occasion steering will pull to the side that has traction. The first couple times this happens can be disconcerting. Once you understand what is happening no big deal. The only other issue I've seen is it locking up when going slow and turnng hard, causing me to stop and back up a couple feet to release. A buddy of mine installed on in his Ford Explorer about a year ago. He was saying two weeks, he couldn't believe all the he waited to install it. He absolutely loves having it. When I bought my locker the website listed 1 locker left in stock. Just checked, the website only lists a locker for 98 - 09.

This is a tough one.... I did my front diff more than 12 years ago! I know I added extra clutch plates. I used two diffs to make one.
If I remember right, I took one of the springs annealed it and flattened it down. The clutches are not hardened and it never caused a problem. That combined with the extra disks reduced the preload. It also limits how much the side gears move in and out under load. The might be why I have never had a snap ring pop out.
I'm pretty sure I posted the details when I did the swap, I will also look for some pictures.
I'm about to have some down time for a week or so where the heaviest thing I will lift is a mouse. I will look when I get a chance.

And for me the simplest and cheapest thing would be to swap in a v6 8inch and do 3) That sounds right... The early starion small diff needs a ring gear spacer. The V6 from diff is a much better solution. You will need to mod the 4 cly cross member to take the V6 diff. The rear mount needs to be dropped down. The V6 crossmember wont fit the 4 cyl frame.
