And for me the simplest and cheapest thing would be to swap in a v6 8inch and do 3)


That sounds right... The early starion small diff needs a ring gear spacer. The V6 from diff is a much better solution. You will need to mod the 4 cly cross member to take the V6 diff. The rear mount needs to be dropped down. The V6 crossmember wont fit the 4 cyl frame.
