Is the front end strong enough to handle being posi at all times? It has such a tight turning radious.if it was going to be a dedicated offroader I wouldn't worry as much. But I want to be able to drive it on black top with out having to be worried about breakage. And thanks for the info and knowladge.

35's, crawler gears, 4 cylinder axles with welded diffs front and back. Daily driven and spent a lot of time door deep in rocks the stock suspension and axles had no problem holding together. Like i said it wasn't until we made the IFS travel way beyond it's limits the TREs and CVs started to fly. I say do it, hit the trails. <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/kewl.gif" alt="" />

We get ice and snow here, a front LSD is NO FUN for that as a daily driver, but lock 1 hub and you are golden in those conditions. Both my '88 and '92 have a Starion LSD in the front. The '92 is my daily driver.

Awsome. When I bought it, there had been a small fire under the hood. All the electrcal bits and wiring was completly ruined. I striped all the wires and pulled the computer. I put a 2 brl off of a 70's model van on it. After a month of trial and error I got it up and running. I don't know that much at all about a raider in fact I had never heard of one until I bought this one. I don't really like the ifs. Had thought about finding a older toyota and swaping the axles and fourlinking front and rear. How strong is the transfore case?

Toyota front axle would need to be flipped to run driverside drop. The transfer cases are stout but gear options are limited. If your truck is an auto you can bolt up all the popular t-cases (6 bolt round 23 spline) if you have a manual swap in an auto from another Montero. The automatics that come in the Montero are really similar to the Toyota and Jeep Aisin transmissions except the Montero ones are a bit beefier and early models 87-92 are hydraulic controlled and don't need a shift controller.
I am pro SAS and I think you should swap in a solid axle up front BUT you also haven't run one of these before so I suggest you stick it out for a while and see what it can do.

I agree with Toasty about pro SAS. BUT, see that is a big but there, BUT run the IFS FOR A BIT. You'll be amazed what it will do. Pi$$ off your heep friends, etc, etc. Weld up those diffs, throw some manual hubs on the front, get some 33's or even better 35's, and go have fun embarassing everyone with their catalogue heeps.
