My '86 has a fancy push button switch. I used a door switch from a microwave oven. Ran a hot lead from the battery to one side of the switch and the other lead to the spade terminal on the starter. You turn the key to 'run' then touch the little button on the switch, which is pretty well hidden under the edge of the dash and secured with some heavy duty Velcro. Of course no one should do this, since it violates all rules of safe wiring, but it's what I did anyway.
Most every microwave has three of those switches next to the door latches and they are small, but you have to test them to make sure you're getting one that closes when you push the button, not one that opens since they use both types.

Are the tumblers broken? Key won't turn in the barrel? or Key turns but starter does not engage? If it is the latter then you may want to read this thread. Twitchy ignition revisited - 1989 V6 Once you know your main battery cables are good, IMHO this is a nice improvement over stock. The factory runs a lot through the ignition switch and if your adding extra loads, the voltage drops can cause problems. An alternative to running all your loads through a relay is to just separate out one or two of the larger one. The first one that comes to mind is to separate out the directionals / marker lights or see if LED bulbs with an electronic flasher would reduce draw and still flash. The rear defroster is another candidate.

If I was to do it would use something like this and just figure a cool way to install it. Hard wired of corse. http://www.carid.com/actron/20-amp-heavy-duty-remote-starter-switch-mpn-cp7854.html

Summit, Jegs, all sell switches that would do that. Off-On-Momentary On. The fun begins powering up everything else that gets turned on by the ignition switch.

mine is doing the same thing. I'm interested in how/what you rig as a fix. i'd been toying with the idea of using the cigarette lighter as a kill switch, now i'm thinking as a momentary to engage the starter.

This weekend going to dig into the wiring from battery to the starter. Once I feel the wiring is stable will look at wiring in a relay and momentary button for starting. My initial thought is to use key to power the relay by splicing into the ignition switch wiring. Maybe use a button like this but replace relay with something beefier if need. So, the process would be turn key to on position, then hit button to fire engine. ~ Jon
