As the title says I'm looking to buy a new Monte. I like my 97 but I'm starting a new job and will be parking in driveways of the well off. It leaks like a seive. I may sell the beater outright or hang on to it and abuse. Not sure yet. So, barring finding another 97 SR which Gen III works the best off road. Sport? XLS? Limited? I'm leaning toward leather because it's easier to clean dog hairs off of.

Whether or not to go with a Gen III should depend upon how much off/back roading you intend to do. The Gen III are NOT the rugged body-on-frame of the Gen I and Gen IIs.

Truth be told I was having a bad day with my little Monte. It seemed everywhere I went and shut it off it wouldn't start again. Between that, the oil leak, the lifter tick and my interior lights going out I was about ready to throw in the towel. With a new day, a little patience and an extra set of eyes I was able to narrow down the oil leak to the oil cooler inlet and return hoses. The interior lights were fixed with a new fuse and a new battery cable connector solved the no start issues. I almost bought a non-leaking 4Runner but then I would just be another Toyota jockey. I'm not looking ahead and keeping the SR for now. Thanks for the link by the way.

Good call DVoeks.

Something no one seems to mention about the Gen III's is how noisy they are. My wife drives a 2003 LTD and I drive a '94 SR. We have the same brand tires but I can't stand driving the Gen III. The road noise in the unibody truck is so much louder, we do all our road trips in the 94.

Thanks Joe. I'm amazed at how quiet my 97 is especially with all of that metal in the back that sound can richochet off of. I had some noisy mud tires on it not too long ago and it didn't really bug me. I'm sure the noise can be improved but then it's not a Cadillac. Besides, soundproofing all of that interior would be costly.
