Put a new fuel filter on, if yours isn't clean, that way you can see if there are bubbles coming into the fuel supply by looking at the filter while it's idling. That's the same thing we have going on with Jorge's '86. Still haven't sorted that one out yet, but when we get to testing it, I expect we'll either have a bad hard line in the main fuel supply side or a leaky pickup assembly in the tank. Both parts are affordable and apparently available from the dealer since I've looked up both part numbers. The pickup assembly is $35 and the line, preformed and everything is $32 from Mitsubishiparts.net.

We also have a brand new fuel pump that seems like it's not working. Funny how similar our problems are, eh?

Back to wrenching. Working on the '83 Mighty Max today, AZRaider, in case you're bored...

The vacuum lines are F#&%ED!!!

In case anyone needs it, go to pages 370-402 in the Engine, Chassis, and Body FSM for the 87 Raider on mitsubishilinks.com for a vacuum line diagram and how to test your vacuum actuators and switches.

If you need me, I'll be untangling my mess of vacuum lines for the next couple hours (at least).

I have a hard copy of that manual if that helps.

Thanks, but I printed off those pages at work. However, I'm still having issues. <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/angry.gif" alt="" />

Hey Dallas, what's the latest then? Is this a carburetor issue? Vacuum? Timing? Sensor? ECU?

What are you thinking?

I'm going with the carb. I went through the vacuum lines and some of them were incorrect.

The first time I went through them, all I did was replace them one at a time as they were and didn't check with the diagram in the FSM. After I did this, that's when it started flooding the engine out with too much gas. The second time I went through, I checked the lines against the diagram and some of them were incorrect. Now that they are correct, I'm still having the same issue.

The only thing that I can think of, is that when I replaced all the lines the first time, I plugged a bunch of vacuum leaks, and those vacuum leaks were enough to let in enough air to counter the extra fuel that was being dumped by the carb.

The other thing that comes to mind, is that I still haven't gotten that stupid O2 sensor out and that it is no good and/or is covered in carbon deposits to the point that it can't read anything but extremely lean.

Hmm... I'm not familiar with the carburetor setup. It seems that everyone that works on them has some kind of fine tuning issue. Perhaps I'm wrong about that but it seems common. O2 sensor huh? You really think it would be causing such a lean condition??? Perhaps you are right and replacing it might be the best option.

I'm heading to Phoenix and will be in town on April 27th- 29th. Need a hand? I don't mind. I'll make sure to come by and visit with JohnnyB and JoseB. Perhaps we can all get together. I won't have my Raider though, I'll have a rental car.

We can get the O2 sensor out, but it ain't pretty. Fear not, though, as we also have the correct size tap to clean out the manifold threads after the air gun powers out the remains of the sensor. I used to have to replace my sensor about every other year in my first Raider (an '87) when the fuel mileage would drop off and it made a big difference.

Worst case scenario, we also have a couple of spare exhaust manifolds if things go south and you need to swap one in.

Also, based on my newly gained understanding of the EGR system, you should give some attention to ensuring that it is operating correctly.

All this is based on the assumption that you haven't gotten it through emissions yet...?
