BUT, the lever that pushes the other lever, mounted on the throttle shaft is tensioned against the lever that moves the secondary valve by a spring, and that spring is broken, so the linkage doesn't make contact until almost full throttle.

Frustrating that it's probably failing emissions due to something as mechanically simple as a broken spring. Makes you really appreciate the simplicity of fuel injection.

I'm going to make it hail and throw the dollar in coins at him.

And I KNOW (now) that's it's failing emissions because of the spring. Going to try to unwind one coil of the broken spring to loop it around where the old flat part broke off. It only has to work for a day...

Got the new and improved headlights in and aimed. Got the choke plate put back in, since it was in a ziplock bag in the glove box when we got the truck (why? don't know). Got new wipers on. Used wire to clean out the windshield sprayer nozzles.

And yesterday...it passed. Emissions, that is. The 'bend the spring around' thing did the trick and got the linkage working again; the result was a near-halving of the NOX number without any resultant increase in the other two numbers.

I think I'll bump the timing up a little, since the EGR is working I'm not as worried about part-throttle knock from being too lean, so from experience I know it'll take up to 7 or 8 degrees BTDC.

We might just take it out on the trail today. Thinking Telegraph Canyon, trail starts in Superior.

Awesome, don't forget before you hit the trail to pre trip inspect that hog. Oil, ATF, antifreeze and IFS remember that wasn't in my fleet long enough for me to learn everything about it. Just sayin' <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/kewl.gif" alt="" />

The truck, per se, didn't have any problems. It really runs well and all the mechanicals checked out before we left (it HAS been in my driveway long enough for that).

The problems started when I pulled off the tires that came with it and put on the Big O brand tires that came with Jorge's '86 Montero. Sure, they're small, LT235/75-15's, and sure, they're load range C. The steel wheels look good on that truck. Trouble is, about ten miles into the trail, one of them starts making a hissing noise every time the leaky spot gets to the bottom as it rotates. Then it shreds. Well, we have a spare. It's a Bridgestone Desert Dueler. It lasted about a mile. Then we had to put on the spare that was on Jorge's '89, a 33x12.5-15, but since both flats were on the passenger side front, we had to put one of the rear tires up there and put the big tire on the back.

Made it home, though. Shoulda left the new BFG A/T 31x10.5-15's on there and we would have saved an hour, easy. Ah well. Telegraph Canyon is a great trail. The 2.6 is a great runner in this truck, as Toasty said before he sold it to Jorge. And it got 20 mpg on the way out to Superior. So there's that.
