Check the radiator cap also. I had one that didn't seal any more and the coolant would steam out past the seal once it got hot. It took me forever to figure out where the coolant was going.

So here's a new twist: I hope I don't sound like an idiot by saying this, because I might be a bit confused on the fan clutch thing, but it seems ok. It's hard to turn when the engine is off, hot or cold... Now, I took it to my buddy's shop and he put one of those radiator cap pressure testers on it and it held pressure fine. So it has a phantom leak??? And, I haven't seen any fluid in the skid plate or on the engine before or after I discovered the issue. I'm stumped...

Mine somehow burns it out the exhaust, without overheating, and without causing bubbles in the radiator. You got me. Figure it's a Triple Diamond thing!

The fan clutch should spin relatively freely when cold so as to not consume engine horsepower, then lock up (not completely locked but it should have strong resistance to turning) when it's hot in order to pull air through the radiator. If it's not doing both of those properly then it needs to be replaced. It's also important that your fan shroud be intact and correctly installed so the fan can pull air from across the entire radiator.

Ahhhhh, now I'm clear on that! That makes sense! So it does need replacing. Aha! I'll try that. Thank you ryany! I really appreciate the info. I still think the water pump needs to be replaced because I didn't really feel surge in the hose when I crimped it with my hand.

And yes, the shroud is tightly intact. I made sure of it when I replaced the radiator. <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif" alt="" /> <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/cheers.gif" alt="" />

You're generally not going to be able to tell whether your water pump is working by feeling anything - it's designed to move volumes of coolant, not create pressure. A water pump is dead simple though, and if it's turning, it's pretty certain that it's pumping. Unless it's leaking, there's no reason to replace it by itself. If you're replacing the timing belt though, then it just makes sense to replace it at the same time.

As always, I tend to agree with RyanY's sentiments. I'd like to add something to the equation as well: Make sure to bleed the cooling system by parking on a slope, nose highest, radiator cap off, and running the engine until bubbles stop coming out. Trapped air can hide in the system and mess with things. Make sure to get it out before putting the cap back on.

And be sure to let the thermostat open before you finish the job. The radiator will appear full and flowing until the thermostat opens.
Do what JBFP says then fill the radiator and reservoir. Let it run with the radiator cap off until the engine warms up. You'll see the fluid level drop when the thermostat opens. At that point top up both the radiator and tank and watch a few minutes more to make sure the air is all purged.

Wow, I didn't even think of that being a possibility! (Obviously) it would be wicked great if that was what the issue was... Fantastic tips mongo and JBFP. Thank you guys! I'll give it a shot and report back!

I see! What I don't see is a leak... So then it must be fine... I wonder if the timing belt needs replacement... I'll have to look into that.
