Need a Spot
This past weekend I pulled the 6G72 out of my 91 Monty to either rebuild or replace it. I've been driving it as is with 1 1/2 dead holes. My wife and daughter really liked riding in it since it had head and leg room that puts our Saturn to shame. The Monty has 224k miles on it and so far since getting it I've replaced the rear brakes, the idler arm, shimmed the rear control arm bushings, lubed all electric door locks and windows, and spiffed up the interior.
I decided to pull the engine after the startup rod or main bearing knock would last longer every time it was started. Once I got it out and torn down, I found the oil pickup screen plugged with sludge and particulate. There was a pile of it in the pan and the valve covers were also sludged to the point of plugging the PCV valve and port. The rod and main bearings were worn down to the copper, but the crank was standard journal size. The block had been rebored to .50mm oversize, so somebody rebuilt this engine at one time. They used Clevite 77 bearings on the rebuild. I wish they would have maintained what they had!
I haven't pulled the heads apart yet, but it's interesting that the one obviously burnt valve is a different make than all the others. They had a letter on the valve head and the burnt one was plain. My plan is to get the crank miked and see if it needs a grind, get a set of rings, valve job, oil pump, timing set, valve dampeners, injectors, rod and main bearings and a rear seal. It has an auto trans so I'm thinking a rebuilt converter and front trans seal also.
A local guy was selling a JDM 6G72 engine that he bought to put in a Dodge, but he didn't realize it wasn't a bolt in. I was going to go that direction and install a low miles engine. I think I can rebuild this one for less. First chore is to take the pan and valve covers and have them hot tanked. There's no way I can clean the covers by hand. I've been looking at Ebay for parts, any of you have good sources?

Hey jeepfreak,
I bought parts like bearings, rings, and got my stuff hot tanked at Duykes Garage out in North Plains. Those guys have worked on orders for my Mitsubishi overhauls over the years. Specifically the 3.0l engines.

Gasket area I bought from autozone, baxters, O'Riiely's and Napa. I've even ordered sets of gaskets from Rock Auto. For heads I like to go with Clearwater out of Florida.

Are you working on your rig tomorrow? I should come by to meet you.

LOL.

Hey captain Orange. How is your stolen rig? Did you get all that sorted out? Is you truck on the road again?

Jay, I won't be working on it today. I ended up ordering up all the parts on Ebay from different vendors. They'll show up next week. Next weekend is the 3 day Memorial day weekend, so I'll be getting as much done as I can then. I have a trip to Spokane mid-June for my grandson's graduation and I want to drive it up. I even ordered a new radiator, as mine was partially plugged and just barely starting to leak. Found a Spectra Premium CU1384 copper/brass 2 row radiator for $152 shipped on Amazon, which was the best price around. I didn't want a plastic/aluminum single row. After getting it running, recharging the a/c with R-12 Freon will be the next challenge. I got a line on an unopened 5 gal. tank of it at a friend's shop, and he owes me some favors.
I also scored a Blue Lake Off Road front bumper with winch mount. It looks a lot like the ARB front bumper and has a built in winch mount. That will go on after the engine is in. I'll let you know as parts show up and I start assembling. You could swing by and check it out.

I'll have some time to come help on Saturday after 10:00. I'll want to wrap up at about 4:00 though. How does that sound?

So, parts started rolling in, and I have enough to assemble the short block. I ordered a full set of valves from an Ebay company in FL, and when received I had 6 of the proper exhaust valves and 6 intake valves for a 24V head! The intake valves were the p/n listed, and they described the proper size for the intake, but they apparently got their signals crossed. Now I have to wait for the replacement valves to finish the heads. I got my torque converter rebuilt at a local shop for $195. They didn't have an exchange so they rebuilt mine in like 2 1/2 hours! They cut it open on a lathe, clean it out, then replace the bearing and lockup clutch.
I also ordered a new radiator off Amazon. I wanted OE style with 2 rows, so I ordered a Spectra Premium for $152 shipped. It showed up yesterday with a torn and re-taped box and a damaged radiator! I was pissed! I shipped it back this morning and got confirmation that a new one is on it's way. So much for getting it running this weekend!
Jay, I won't be doing much on the engine until I get the valves. I have to put a new jack on my engine hoist also. It kept dropping when I was pulling the engine. I have a Harbor Freight 8 ton jack to install so I need to make a new base to fit it. The old one was only 3 ton. I'll be taking assembly pics and will post them up as I take them.

It's still in rough shape. I haven't driven it since I got it back. I replaced the driver side inner axle seal and filled the diff, but that's about it. My buddy supposedly has a box of parts for me to fix everything, but I just haven't had the time to work on the damn thing, let alone pick them up from him in Springfield.

Maybe after I finish building this car for the Pikes Peak hillclimb and the race is over I'll be able to find time for my own projects.
