okay next question for the person who is new to monteros.

I was going down the highway and it started to stutter then it died.
I rolled off the ramp and then it would start idle really low like 250-350rpm and if i gave it throtlle it would very hesitantly rev to maybe 1200 rpm max.
and then die.

I turn the key to accessory and couldn't hear the fuel pump and it kinda felt like a fuel pump so i changed the fuel pump but that wasn't it.

before this sometimes when it was cold out it would idle ruff but it would smooth out after a few seconds. so now I'm beginning to think it must be some kind of sensor.

I grounded the number 1 terminal on the edu connector and turned the key on and counted the check engine light blinks but it just never stopped blinking.

there isn't a fuel pressure port so I can't check if its fuel and its a lot of work to pull the intake and check all the plugs for spark

but the engine sounds really smooth for the most part just idles really low then if i rev it up a little it sputters and dies.

whats the next step for trouble shooting these engines?

sorry it was on my 95 SR 3.5

I pulled the coils and checked them one of them tested bad from the spark plug boot end to the spark plug wire. so i replaced that it it still ran the same way.

it was running and i disconnected the MAF sensor and then gave it some throttle and instead of dying it reved up so i did that a few times and it never died but it was running in the limp mode.

so i changed the MAF and it runs good now.

I don't know why it didn't kick out a check engine light until i actually disconnected it but that seems to be what the problem was.

thanks!

Can you drive it in limp mode? I have a MUT-II computer, should be able to diag your truck. I'm still learning how to use it so no guarantees. I've about got it figured out on the newer Montero's but i haven't quite got it to tap into the Pre '98 trucks yet. I think they take the other rom pack i have.

Getting the Wheeling Fever
Mines doing something similar to yours. Does anyone know the test procedure for the MAF sensor.
