I have an old Gen1 that I'm trying to fix up for my son. It's basically the exact same as my vehicle ('90 LWB 3.0/V6). The moon roof is stuck closed. The motor turns and tries its darndest but the roof doesn't move. I think that it's frozen maybe because the seal is pretty destroyed and there's a bunch of rust around the edges.
Is there any way to manually crank open the roof on these vehicles? I read some bits and pieces here about using a hex key to do this but I can't find one in the vehicle nor do I have any idea where I would put it to crank the roof open. The FSM seems to be completely silent on this subject, so maybe it's not for these Gen1 vehicles.
Anyway I may end up replacing it but wanted to see if I could get it opened first just try cleaning it up and opening the drains.
thanks, steve

On my 89 4dr, you could remove the cover just forward of the moon roof opening. Under the cover was the motor and the hex opening for the manual crank. The original tool set included a hex wrench for this. <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/shiner.gif" alt="" />

I'm not sure that I expect to be able to open it, but at least I can give it a try. I always wondered what that hex key in the little tool bag was for. I didn't get any of the extras with this one when I hauled it home (saving it from the junk man). But I've still got them all from my other one. thanks! steve
