Apologize if this is a stupid question. I'm not an A/T guy.

Does anyone know what A/T came in the Montero Sport Limited 3.5L? Can't remember if that was AWD only or if there was an option.

Might be able to pick up a '99 cheap and that may turn into my next build. Don't really want to go through the hassle of another M/T and dual t-cases.

dont know about the sport, I think it is similar to our challenger.

But the auto in the Gen 2.5 monteros is the Asian Warner AW4

as used in Jeep Cherokees.

Auto with the dual cases is absolutely unstoppable!

Thanks, Ian. Yep, knew about that. I'm just trying to make sure I have my ducks in a row. I'm working on picking up a '99 Limited 3.5L now. Haven't seen it yet and the owners are out of town and know NOTHING about this thing.

I want to MAKE SURE this will easily take the NP dual t-case conversion BEFORE I buy. smile Wouldn't think of building another Sport without the t-cases now. Spoiled. smile smile

Thanks! Don't remember. Been so long since we had the '99 .... I'm thinking now that the '99 Limited didn't come with AWD, that that started in '00. Anyway, no AWD is what I want, so .... Just trying to make sure I get the 3.5L. Dynatrac axles are pigs - don't want to try the passes with a 3.0L. smile

So, again, pardon any stupid questions, but this IS the transmission everyone has been putting the dual t-cases on, right? Replace the tail shaft, output, etc, and bolt up the NP231 23-spline?

ES,

The tranny you want if its from a Mitsu is the V4AW3, the NP231 & NP 242 bolt up to it but you have to swap in a tailhousing from a Jeep Cherokee that has the AW4 tranny (Jeeps version of the V4AW3).

I have done this recently using a Behemoth Strong Box mated to an NP 242.

You might be better sourcing a tranny out of a Gen 2.5 Montero or a Jeep Cherokee.

heres my writeup.

Thanks Ian. DANG. Dang, dang, dang. PM'd Danny and when through his thread. The transmission appears to not be the issue, of course, its the computer(s). Again. Looks like he used my suggestion on the shift solenoids. That worked. The T/C was an aftermarket controller? If I have to do all the sensor/solenoid hacks I might as well drop a 5-speed M/T in. Sigh.

This could be just as difficult as getting the A/T PCM working in my M/T. Mmmmm.
