Im concerned that it may have sheared? I will try to get a better pic tomorrow of the crank.

Looks sheared. Not good. Maybe I missed something, whats the purpose of the teardown? Are you looking to repair a problem (timing belt doesn't look messed up at first glance) You will need to get that pin out of the end of the crank snout and the balancer and replace it.

The sheared pin is part of the crank timing belt pulley, the snout should be fine.
Woodruff key times the crank pulley and that pin times the harmonic balancer. You probably need a new crank pulley, I don't think that pin was designed to be replaceable.

Getting the Wheeling Fever
Oh, to be clear, I haven't done this before, on any vehiculre... so if you see something wrong, or, well anything. I am planning on getting an new crank pulley anyway, this one is cracked and welded by the PO, trying to find one at the wrecking yard first, I'm on a budget and this is looking expensive already. I'm going step by step and doing my best to get everything along the way. trying to decide what all to replace as well as preventative maintenance as I'm in there. timing belt looks like its in good shape, no idea if the water-pump was done at the same time, going to check the pulleys at the same time, not sure if I should dig deeper when I am doing this. ie pull the cam shafts, lap the valves ect. I know I had a knocking sound so I suspect one of the hydraulic lash adjusters may be bad. Should I replace the valve stem seals while im in here? no evidence it's needed but, you see where im going with this I hope.

[Linked Image] And whoever thought bolfing things on the firewall side of the head was a good idea needs to be shot... the pass side head the bolts werent to bad, the dr side the firewall is closer to the head and thus even harder, the reassembly of those coolant passages, im not looking forward to that...

New pictures coming up. In the meantime, anyone know where to source a set of coolant lines, I would like to replace them all while ive got things opened up. Also, anyone have an extra harmonic balancer laying around I can take off your hands? 94 SR. Oh, this next set you can see some of the damage of a dropped plenum butterfly valve. the PO had mentioned it had been rebuilt after.

everything pulled but the valve stem seals.

here if you look close you can see the scoring of the dropped butterfly valve. Oh and its also apparently helacoiled, the things we learn.

and the piston didnt make it compleatly unscathed. probably stuck a valve or two open for a bit along the way.

Need a Spot
Great thread. Ive not done this on a Mitsu yet, but I did it on an 85 Westphalia Vanagon. Had to remove the entire motor...

I know Im a bit late, but the thing that saved me when putting things back together was the fact that I literally took tape and labeled EVERYTHING that I disconnected. Im glad I did because the factory service manual from VW was garbage.

Good luck!
