Hi.
I'm looking for a Montero, but I've never owned one, so my learning curve is pretty steep right now. I've been reading everything I can, and I'm sure the answers to my questions are out there somewhere, but I'm having trouble finding a few specifics.
My local wrecking yard has a '95 SR. The air pump was missing, but I grabbed the rear locker. They also have a 3.5 Sport, and I grabbed the 4.90's, which means I now have a pile of gears and axle parts for a vehicle I don't even own. I have a feeling this new addiction is going to get bad. Anyway...
I've read that the ideal vehicle is a '95 SR because it has a center locking diff, which I therefore assume the others do not. Is this something that can be swapped if I grab the t-case, or is it dependent on a bunch of sensors and wiring? There seemed to be multiple air lines running from the spot in the SR where the air pump used to be. Is the center locking diff actuated by the pump? Is there anything else actuated by the pump, or just the rear lock?
Also, a couple of the vehicles I'm looking at have the 5 speed trans. Do the 5 speed vehicles have the same Super Select 4wd system, or something different? Every reference I've seen is in relation to the automatic transmission.

both the LS and SR have center locking diff, the SR has the bigger 3.5 motor and factory locking rear diff. so no need to grab the T-case in either case.
94 montero SR 3.5. 33" BFG TA KO's, OME HD rear springs, front T-bar crank. 93 600 Katana. stage 1 jet kit, Uni foam air filter 02 honda shadow. "for when the woman wants to go with" 97 Acura Integra.

The have different size diffs I believe.

"They" who? The auto vs. the 5 speed? I've read of 9 vs. 9.5 rears, but I thought that was Gen1 variations. I didn't grab axles, just the 3rd member. I suppose I should reconsider that, though I probably won't end up with the 5 speed.
Front is the same, right?

The SR should be 9.5", the Sport should be 9". I don't believe they'll interchange.

The Sport with the 3.5 motor had the 9.5" rear. I pulled the two apart to swap the 4.90 gears in to the locker.
Still looking for any input from a 5 speed owner as to the 4wd system differences between the stick and the auto. I like to be able to know what I'm going to look at (or rule something out) before I drive an hour to see something from Craigslist, know what I mean?
All thoughts and suggestions appreciated. Thanks

What front same? LS vs. SR (both auto) = maybe - depends on engine size RS/LS (manual) vs. SR (auto) = probably yes RS/LS 3.0l auto - most likely 7.5" RS/LS 3.0l manual - most likely 8" LS 3.5l auto - most likely 8" SR 3.5l - 8" SR 3.0l - 7.5" Sport 3.5l - most likely 8" Still looking for any input from a 5 speed owner as to the 4wd system differences between the stick and the auto.
4wd system (transfer case) in Gen 2 Auto vs. Manual = same - all center locking - although physically they do not interchange. My local wrecking yard has a '95 SR. The air pump was missing, but I grabbed the rear locker. You will need the drivers side axle also - you should just grab the entire rear differential assembly from the '95 - wheel flange to wheel flange. The Sport with the 3.5 motor had the 9.5" rear. I pulled the two apart to swap the 4.90 gears in to the locker. yep - I did this for my '92RS... now pulled out since selling the '92 and sitting on my garage floor (flange to flange) until I find time to bolt into my '93SR. Is the center locking diff actuated by the pump? Is there anything else actuated by the pump, or just the rear lock?
Pump only actuates the rear locker. Transfer case is mechanically actuated with the transfer case shift lever, and has sensors to light up lights on the dash.
